ATHLETIC BOOSTERS MEETING TODAY/ OPEN BOARD POSITIONS



The Maggie L. Walker Athletic Boosters Club will hold a monthly Board Meeting at 6:00 p.m. today, March 13, in room 105. Board Officers and Directors are expected to attend. All Athletic Boosters members and anyone interested in becoming involved with Athletic Boosters are welcome to attend. The Board is in the process of filling open Officer and Director positions for the 2019-20 academic year. Anyone interested in joining the Board or with questions may contact Athletic Boosters President Rich Schweiker at dukeschweikers@aol.com.





DAY OF THE DRAGON


Tomorrow, Thursday, March 14, the Governor's School Foundation is hosting the second Day of the Dragon, a full day dedicated to celebrating the good work of the Governor's School and promoting Foundation support. The Foundation will kick off this year's event Pi-Day of the Dragon with a special breakfast honoring our newly launched Legacy Circle, which recognizes Foundation contributors who have given more than $25,000 cumulatively throughout the history of the school. Other activities throughout the day include:
  • A Pi-Day Moon Pie Party for MLWGS students
  • A student thank you note writing event
  • Opportunities for students, faculty, alumni, and alumni families to participate in the panel painting for the new Maggie L. Walker mural which will go outside the bluestone entrance
  • 2019 Taylor Teaching Award Presentation, detailing Mr. Benesh's recent travels to England in the Steps of Sir Isaac Newton!

And throughout the day, the Foundation will be busy sharing info about their many efforts to strengthen the academic experience for our students and garnering support for our 2018-2019 Annual Fund Campaign. Make a contribution to the Foundation during the Pi-Day of the Dragon!






FALL/WINTER ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS














What an outstanding year the MLWGS Dragons have experienced in fall and winter sports! Below are some of their highlights with many that accumulate to the school record for the annual Wells Fargo Cup. The Wells Fargo Cup goes to the school in each group classification that has achieved the best overall record in VSHL state-level competition across 27 sports and 12 academic activities-  the state champions’ state champion.

Weeks 1, 7, and 10 Lexus of Richmond, Pursuit of Perfect Leadership Award Weekly Winner, with at least one more winner to be announced.


BASKETBALL
MW Girls Basketball tips into the VHSL State Tournament for the first time in school history with an exciting run into the second round. The team finished 4th in the State.

MW Girls Basketball with 3 players earning All-Region team; one on the first team, two on the second team.

CROSS COUNTRY

MW junior named All-Metro Cross Country Runner of the Year for the second time by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

MW junior named 2018 USA Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year representing Virginia.

MW 2018 
Boys and Girls 2A Cross Country Regional Winners for the sixth consecutive year with two individual regional champions. 

DIVING
MW junior is back-to-back 2019 State 2A One-Meter Diving Champion. This represents the fifth consecutive State title for MW in this sport.

GOLF
MW qualified for the 2A Golf State Championship for the first time.


SWIMMING
MW Swim Teams at Regionals- the Girls repeated their 1st place finish for the fifth consecutive year, while the Boys also earned 1st place repeating their Regional win from 2018.

MW Girls Swim Team wins VHSL State Championship for the fifth consecutive year. 


TRACK
Two MW runners compete at the New Balance Indoor National Track Championship.

MW Boys and Girls win Indoor Track State Championship. This is the sixth consecutive year for the girls while the boys recaptured the title this year. 


WRESTLING
MW Wrestling had 3 Regional Champions and qualifies a record number for the State championship. MW Wrestling with individual State Champion.

Congratulations to all of our athletic teams! You’ve demonstrated great commitment to your team in addition to maintaining your academic workload. Coach Hawkins is a proud Dragon Athletic Director.







ORCHESTRA NEWS
















Well, the flu didn't defeat us after all! Both Orchestras performed wonderfully last night at District Orchestra Assessment.

Advanced Orchestra received Straight Superiors last night performing Grade VI music.  Intermediate received straight Excellent's on stage and a Superior in Sight-Reading. They performed Grade IV/V music.

If you have an orchestra student in your class congratulate them today!

Orchestra is led by Mrs. Christina Sienkiewicz and we thank her for filling these young lives with music.
