COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS THROUGH THE TRANSCRIBE-A-THON

Today, September 25 from 3:30-5 p.m., the MW Library will host its first Transcribe-a-thon for this school year. This is an opportunity to decode historic documents into searchable digital versions for the benefit of historians, scholars, genealogists, and other researchers. Ms. Sonya Coleman from the Library of Virginia will be here to share exciting project updates. Enjoy free sweet treats and get a cool button at this annual kickoff event. Once you participate in person, you will have the option to continue earning community service hours (which count as outside of school service hours) by participating in future transcribe-a-thons and/or transcribing historic documents online from anywhere. In future on-site events here at the MW Library, you will also have the option to transcribe for the Library of Virginia or the Library of Congress during those events. See Ms. DeGroat in the library to learn how to get involved.

FALL FESTIVAL

The Maggie L Walker Governor’s School annual Fall Festival sponsored by the PTSA is a fantastic event for the whole school and the surrounding community. The festival is a great event with delicious food and live student performances. All proceeds raised benefit the participating student groups and help fund their activities for the year.

We have a great team of parent volunteers led by Gopal Bhagavatula and Dena Neuwirth that are working hard to provide a great festival to our community! Let’s give them a our heartfelt thanks.

Make plans to attend this fun festival on Friday, October 4, 2019, 3:30-8 p.m. 1000 N. Lombardy St., on the front lawn.

If you order a physical card that can be reloaded, you can hold on to them and use the reload feature.  Maggie Walker will continue to earn a percentage with every reload.

AP Registration Confirmation and Fee Collection Is This Week (2/20-2/22)!

Attention Parents of Advanced Placement Participants!

AP Exam Registration and Fee Collection Information

A handout with this information along with an AP Bulletin from the College Board was distributed to all AP students through their AP classes last week.

Registration for Advanced Placement exams will begin February 1, 2019 using the online system Total Registration. Registration will take only a few minutes and can be completed from any computer with internet access. You will be asked to create a login account so that you will have the ability to reprint your confirmation ticket and add or delete exams, if necessary.

Follow these steps to complete the registration, payment, and confirmation process:

1) Register for the tests you plan to take at www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/471851
2) Select your payment method: Check (made out to “MLWGS”), cash, or online payment at https://osp.osmsinc.com/MLWGS (convenience fee applies)
3) Turn in your confirmation ticket to the Counseling Office during the designated times between February 20-22. Students should attach their payment or online payment receipt to their confirmation ticket. A member of the counseling team will review the registration form and payment with each student.

When registering through Total Registration please be sure to select all of your exams and the appropriate teachers. If everything is correct, click "Confirm your Registration." This will record your registration and display the confirmation page or “ticket”. When you reach the confirmation ticket, print two copies, one for your records and the other to return to school with your payment or online payment receipt. The Counseling Office will collect these items between 11:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. on February 20, 21, and 22. This year, students will have the option to pay fees through the MLWGS payment system or turn in a check or cash by the same date and time. Each AP exam costs $94.00 and must be paid for before we order exams. A fee waiver or reduction is available for families that meet certain guidelines but must be approved in advance. Please see your counselor by Friday, February 15 to inquire about a fee waiver.

Here are the important dates: 
February 1- Online registration begins
February 22- Online registration ends
February 20-22- AP Fee and Receipt Collection (11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.): All students must turn in a copy of the confirmation ticket with their payment/receipt. Students should use lunch or an afternoon study hall to come to pay their fees or turn in a receipt.
After 3:30 p.m. on February 22, a late fee of $10 per exam will be charged.
March 8- Exams will be ordered. If you forgot to order an exam an additional fee of up to $55 extra per exam may apply after this date (exam availability not guaranteed). This is the last day to cancel an exam and receive a refund of $84 ($10 administrative fee).
April 23- Last day to cancel an exam and receive a $69 refund ($25 administrative fee as exams will have been ordered). Requests for refunds after this date will not be honored.

Attention Seniors! If you know which college you will be attending in the fall, please carefully review the college's AP credit policy to determine if the college will accept AP credit for the program in which you are enrolling.

If you receive accommodations for a documented disability and have not yet had them approved by CollegeBoard, the deadline to submit this paperwork for 2019 AP Exams is February 22nd. Contact Ms. Davis Cobb at joy.davis@gsgis.k12.va.us.

REMINDERS:
· You may need to arrange transportation for afternoon AP exams. Exams in the afternoon will not begin prior to 12:00 p.m. and may not be over before 3:30 p.m. Plan accordingly.

· Exam pre-administration sessions (Bubblefest) will be held on April 23 (seniors) and 24 (juniors, sophomores, and freshmen) in the auditorium during lunch. You must attend a pre-administration session in order to take AP exams.

MLWGS DRAMA PRESENTS SWEET CHARITY

February 28-March 2, 2019

Inspired by Federico Fellini’s ‘Nights of Cabiria,’  SWEET CHARITY explores the turbulent love life of Charity Hope Valentine, a hopelessly romantic but comically unfortunate dance hall hostess in New York City. With a tuneful, groovy, mid-1960s score by Cy Coleman, sparkling lyrics by Dorothy Fields, and a hilarious book by Neil Simon, SWEET CHARITY captures all the energy, humor, and heartbreak of Life in the Big City for an unfortunate but irrepressible optimist.

Drama Club Sponsor Devon E. Mattys and the Maggie L. Walker Drama Department are thrilled to announce their production of the Broadway musical SWEET CHARITY, directed by renown local director Foster Solomon, Musical Director Roy George, Choreographer Aza Raine, Set Designer Rebekah Barnett, Technical Director Henry Gizzi, and Set Construction Dan Giorgis, this show features a talented cast of Maggie Walker students.

TICKETS AND PERFORMANCES: February 28-March 2 at 7 p.m. at Maggie L. Walker High School auditorium, 1000 N. Lombardy Street, Richmond, VA 23220.

MLWGS Rubik's Cube Club announces their first inaugural competition.

The first MLWGS Rubik's Cube Competition will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2019 starting at 9 a.m. Competitors are asked to arrive by 8:30 a.m.

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY

Several diligent MLWGS students from Chesterfield, Goochland, Henrico, Prince George, and Richmond dove into the challenging and rewarding work of transcribing historic documents for the Making History: Transcribe! project on Wednesday.

Some found it easier to decipher cursive with help from a friend. And whether working independently or together, students discovered that reading these documents brought history to life in new ways.

During this Transcribe-a-thon, we worked with two recently merged collections: the Virginia Museum of History and Culture’s Unknown No Longer and the Library of Virginia’s Virginia Untold, both focused on pre-1865 Virginia documents by and/or about enslaved and freed African Americans.

The letters, freedom suits, and other documents that students transcribed revealed both personal and public details about individuals and families, painful details about the brutality and inhumanity of slavery, and poignant details about resilience, tenacity, love, and loss–details that will soon be searchable by scholars, historians, and genealogists.

Along with other Transcribe volunteers, these MLWGS students are helping make the story that accessible historical records tell about Virginia and America more complete.

If you’d like to participate in this important project, stop by the library to see Ms. DeGroat. You may earn up to 35 hours toward the MLWGS community service requirement by participating in this project. After you attend a training session or Transcribe-a-thon, you can even work on transcriptions from home.

MLWGS General PTSA Meeting - College Overview

Please plan to join us for our next General PTSA meeting, taking place on Tuesday February 26th at 8am in Room 153. This meeting will address many aspects of your student's college-prep journey. Our Senior counselors, Rachel Loving and Kierstin Streitel, will provide an overview of the college application process, discuss timeliness, and answer parents' questions. This program is open to all Maggie Walker parents, but tends to be especially useful for our Freshman and Sophomore parents who may be wondering how they can support their students and help them plan accordingly to achieve their college goals. This is a great opportunity to meet Maggie Walker's fabulous Senior counselors and understand the process that lies ahead. We hope to see you on Tuesday!
