WINTER CONCERT THIS THURSDAY

The orchestras, bands, and chorus invite you to celebrate the holidays with our annual winter concert on Thursday, December 19, at 7:00 p.m. The spectacular musicians at Maggie Walker are putting on a show you will not want to miss! Selections include “A Mad Russian’s Christmas,” “Christmas at the Movies,” “A Holiday Sing-Along,” and more!





VOTE FOR SNOW QUEEN 2020 CANDIDATE 


Perisa Ashar (Henrico '21) is a finalist competing for the award of Snow Queen 2020, sponsored by the Children’s Museum of Virginia. Each year, the Snow Queen Award is open to qualified applicants from area schools based on academics, leadership, extra-curricular activities, service, and volunteer work within their community, and to those who have inspired children to learn.

Perisa is the only Dragon student competing in this contest at this stage. The final stage of selection for Snow Queen 2020 is based on public voting from November 29- December 24; you can vote daily until December 24. The MLWGS community can support Perisa Ashar by voting for her at the following link and sharing it with your friends and family.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED JANUARY 8

Save the Date! The Governor's School Foundation is looking for volunteers to help mail out Night of the Dragon postcards, Wednesday, January 8. We will get started around 9:00 a.m. in room 228 across from the Foundation office; please feel free to stop by anytime throughout the morning as your schedule permits. This is a fun opportunity to meet some other parents and to help support the work of the Governor's School Foundation, Boosters groups, and PTSA!

LIBRARY NEWS: AUTHOR KAREN CHASE VISITING MLWGS 

Thanks to the support of Lisa Williams and our National English Honor Society members, the MW Library will be co-sponsoring an author visit and discussion in the winter/spring of 2020 along with a writing contest and other activities centered on Carrying Independence, a historical novel by local author Karen Chase.

Another local writer donated the funds necessary for our school to receive the gift of 25 copies of the novel (one copy for the library’s collection and a classroom set of 24 for current and later use). I am SO grateful for all this goodness and look forward to sharing this reading experience with students, teachers, and parents! I anticipate that you will enjoy the ways in which Ms. Chase’s well-researched and engaging novel brings the Revolutionary War to life.

MLWGS ART STUDENTS AT THE SMITHSONIAN

Over one hundred MLWGS Art and Photography students toured several of the art museums in Washington D.C. on December 6. Students visited the National Gallery of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum, the American Art Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery. Photography students also took this opportunity to photograph the unique environment and architecture of this historic city. By experiencing these works of art in person, art students were able to gain a much deeper appreciation of the technique, color, and scale of these masterpieces. Special thanks to the Governor’s School Foundation for their support which helped reduce the cost for all students. 

BOYS VOLLEYBALL NEWS

The Virginia High School League 2019 Class 4 all-state boys volleyball teams have been selected. Congratulations to Maggie Walker’s Grant Collier (Chesterfield '20) and Charlie Unice (Henrico '21) chosen for the 1st team, and Tyler Pimblett (Hanover '20) 2nd team.

Herff Jones returns to MLWGS on November 6 and 7 (during lunch in the downstairs commons area) to accept orders and payment for graduation announcements and other graduation paraphernalia. These two dates will be the only time their representative is in the building. If you forget or wish to order online, visit: www.herffjones.com. Please remember to place your order by December 31 to ensure delivery and avoid an up-charge. Don’t forget…seniors have already paid for their caps and gowns. SCRIP ORDERS DUE THIS FRIDAY


Great Lake Scrip Orders are due THIS Friday, November 8 by noon. You can place your orders on-line or with the attached paper form (a full list of retailers can be found at shopwithscrip.com and you can write in any not on the form). If you pay by check, make sure the check is payable to MLWGS PTSA and reaches the PTSA Scrip Box in room 100 (Valenta William's office) by Friday at noon. It's not too early to start thinking about holiday shopping, travel, and dining plans! Plastic cards need to be ordered either on November 8 or December 6 to receive them before our December break. Welcome to Almost, Maine, a place that's so far north, it's almost not in the United States. It's almost in Canada. And it's not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting organized- so it almost doesn't exist. One cold, clear, winter night, as the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the residents of Almost, Maine, find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal and the hearts mend- almost- in this delightful midwinter night's dream. The show runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 7-9, at 7:00 p.m.

MLWGS COMMUNITY SERVICE FAIR THIS FRIDAY


Maggie Walker requires 140 hours of community service by the 3rd quarter of every student’s senior year. Each year the school holds a community service fair to help bring organizations and students together. The fair is this Friday, November 8.

The Freshman Class is being split into two groups with the first group attending from 10:50-11:10 a.m. and the second group attending from 11:10-11:30 a.m. During lunch (11:30 a.m.-noon), the Fair will be open to all interested students.

The following wonderful organizations are planning to attend: Governor’s School Foundation, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Courts for Kids, RampsRVA, Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation, The Doorways, VCU Health, Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, and Sylvia’s Sisters.




VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR INFORMATION FORUMS




Information Forums will be held on November 11, 12 and 13. Prospective students and parents can meet teachers and students, ask questions, tour the building, and receive an overview of the program and extracurricular activities.

We need volunteers to provide refreshments, help with setup and clean up, and answer questions from prospective students/parents.

Please sign up to either donate cookies and brownies or to help on any of the three nights. All food must be store bought and nut free due to allergies.

Thank you to everyone who has either signed up to help with your time or with cookies donations. We still need more goodies! Last year, the PTSA Hospitality Committee served about one thousand cookies a night!

We will be collecting your donations this Friday, November 8 from 8-9 a.m. in the Bluestone lobby. You can drop off your donations or send them in with your student.

Congratulations to Minji Cho (Chesterfield '21) who will perform with the All National Orchestra this coming weekend in Orlando, FL. Also, congratulations to Mira Eisenhauer (Henrico '21), Emma Chun (Henrico '20), Sam Lichtman (Henrico '22), Eric Qian (Chesterfield '22), and Joshua Yoo (Chesterfield '22) who will be performing with Senior Regional Orchestra this weekend in Lynchburg, VA.

Jennifer Todd, Science department faculty, has been selected by the Virginia High School League as the 2018-19 Boys Tennis Coach of the Year! The selection to receive this prestigious honor is based upon Jenn’s positive work with the athletes in our program. Congratulations!

VHSL will submit Coach Todd to the National Federation of State High School Associations for further honors at the sectional and national levels.  The VHSL sends its most sincere congratulations! They wish Coach Todd and our athletes continued success in the seasons ahead.




PERISA ASHAR: VA DELEGATE FOR GLOBAL YOUTH INSTITUTE- THE WORLD FOOD PRIZE

Junior Perisa Ashar wins Virginia Delegate Position and represents Virginia at The Global Youth Institute of World Food Prize.

Perisa Ashar won the Virginia delegate position to represent the State at Global Youth Institute of World Food Prize, in Des Moines, Iowa. She presented her research on “South Sudan Food Insecurity: Problems and Solutions” in a round table conference to 200 other students from 12 countries, and global leaders such as the 2016 World Food Prize Laureate, Dr. Howarth Bouis, who pioneered the concept of biofortification of crops to prevent micronutrient malnutrition. Perisa researched the political mileu, climate, and causes of food shortage in South Sudan and possible geo-political and scientific solutions at regional and global level. Each year, the World Food Prize Youth Institute convenes around the World Food Day, October 16, and chosen student delegates present their findings with international experts and their peers, connect with other students from around the world, tour cutting-edge industrial and research facilities, and take part in symposium discussions with global leaders in science, industry, and policy in order to explore and solve local, national, and global hunger and food security issues.

Perisa also interacted and attended the Borlaugue Symposium led by World Food Prize Laureates, former U.S. Ambassadors of several countries (Thailand, Senegal, Uganda, Colombia), and world leaders such as the former president of Nigeria, the President of Democratic Republic of Congo, and humanitarian leaders from over 65 countries. In addition, Perisa also attended the ceremony in which the 2019 World Food Prize Laureate, Mr. Simon Groot was awarded the Food Laureate Prize by Mr. Kenneth Quinn (President of World Food Prize and Former Ambassador to Cambodia).

The World Food Prize is an international award recognizing the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity, or availability of food in the world. It was conceived by 1970 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Norman Borlaugh, and strives for the supply of nutritious food to all people and to fight global hunger and starvation with the theme of Pax Agricultura or Peace Through Agriculture.

The Foundation Annual Fund parent competition is well underway! Each year Dragon parents battle it out to see which class has the highest parent percentage of Foundation Annual Fund supporters. And remember this year the class with the highest parent percentage will receive a student ice cream party at the end of the school year! Help the Foundation meet its goal of raising $330,000 before the end of the school year.

ATHLETIC BOOSTERS MONTHLY MEETING TONIGHT

PTSA MEETING DECEMBER 12

Please join us for our next MLWGS General PTSA meeting, to be held on Wednesday, December 12 at 5:30 p.m. in room 153. With the holidays, college applications, midterms, and more on our students' minds, it is a good time to discuss teen anxiety and stress management. School psychologist Lisa Ebeling will provide information about the many resources for support available through the counseling department at Maggie Walker. She will be joined by Stephanie Violante, a third year doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology program at VCU. Ms. Violante is also a therapist in the Anxiety Clinic and a behavioral health clinician at the Children's Hospital of Richmond. She will give an overview of anxiety, including signs of anxiety in adolescents, treatment options, and ways in which you can support your student. Both of our speakers will take questions from parents following the presentation. We hope to see you next Wednesday!

As of November 29, 2018, the MLWGS Foundation has raised $96,298 toward our 2018-19 goal of $350,000. Recently, Mr. Benesh's math modeling seminar left for a research trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, and some of Mr. McGuire's students set off on the inaugural AP Comp Gov UK trip. Grants from the Foundation offset the costs of these trips (as well as several others) for every student attending. We've already committed to funding lots more student travel in the winter and spring, and we need your support to do it! Thank you to everyone who has given!

Week of June 6, 2018

IMPORTANT SENIOR INFORMATION

Graduation Tickets will be distributed June 4-8 by Ms. Sheppard and Mrs. Boswell during lunch outside room 330. Please note that these are tickets for admission to the graduation exercises and are not the announcements you would have ordered from Herff-Jones. Anyone planning to come watch graduates receive their diplomas must have a ticket to gain entrance into the theater. Each student will receive 14 tickets, and more tickets may be available on a case-by-case basis. If tickets are lost, they may not be replaceable. Please keep them in a safe place until June 15.

Senior Recognition Night is Thursday, June 7 at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium. This is the night we all come together to honor the many contributions and memories of our graduating seniors. The highlight of the evening for the students is always the Senior Slide Show, and it is a great opportunity for you to get a sense of what the last four years have looked like inside our halls. Students should arrive by 6:30 p.m. for the line-up wearing professional/business attire; caps and gowns are NOT worn for this event.

Attention Graduating Seniors and Parents, there are two important forms that should be completed prior to graduation.

The Senior Check Out Form (Pink Form- available for pick up in the Counseling Office on Ms. Hicks' desk)- This form is REQUIRED for all seniors to officially "check out" and verify that they do not owe any textbooks, library books, athletic uniforms, reusable parking passes, or fees (you must have all things signed off on even if you have never used them). Seniors must have all teachers and various other staff members sign their form. It must be fully completed and turned in to your senior counselor by the day of your last exam or Wednesday, June 13. Contact your counselor or Ms. Hicks, School Counseling Registrar (x3213), if you have questions or concerns about the check-out process. 

Note: All students, even if they have never played a sport, must have Ms. Hawkins sign their form. Ms. Hawkins can sign the forms for non-athletes on June 4-5 and then will sign all remaining forms (athletes and non-athletes) when she returns from states the following week on June 11-13.

VCU Transcript Request Form (attached here, available on the VCU website, and available for pick up on Ms. Hicks’ desk)- In order to transfer your dual enrollment credits from VCU to your future college, you must complete this form and submit it directly to VCU with the $5 fee. Please follow up with your future institution to ensure that this document is received. Your MLWGS transcript will not be sufficient to transfer these credits. If you are attending VCU, you do not have to worry about this form because your VCU credits are already on your college transcript.

MLWGS transcripts will be sent to the institution seniors indicated on their senior survey (which all seniors have already completed) the week following graduation. No additional action is required to have this transcript sent. Please let us know if that institution has changed or if you would like us to send an additional copy to another institution as well.




MLWGS PTSA MEETING

Please join us for the last General PTSA meeting of the 2017-2018 school year! The meeting will be held this Friday, June 8, at 8 a.m. in room 153. We know it's late in the year and you're ready for the summer, but we have a great meeting lined up, beginning with the election of the PTSA Executive Board for the 2018-2019 school year. The slate to be voted on has been posted to the MLWGS Facebook page.

After the vote, we will have coffee and pastries with MLWGS Director Robert Lowerre. Dr. Lowerre will reflect on his first year at Maggie Walker, and the direction of things to come. He welcomes questions from parents following this discussion. School psychologist Lisa Ebeling has also prepared an important presentation about stress and techniques that parents can use to help their students manage that stress. She will talk about identifying when stress becomes anxiety that may require outside support. Ms. Ebeling will take questions from parents about these and related topics. We hope to see you on Friday!

SENIOR ART SHOW: CHROMA

You are invited to the opening of the show Friday, June 8 at Art Works Gallery in Richmond.  Senior (Class of 2018) artists will be available from 6-9 p.m. to talk about their art and show the culmination of their work throughout their final year of high school. We hope to see you there!

The show’s title, Chroma, reflects the very basic and fundamental individuality of each artist’s personality and body of work as it has developed over the past several years. Each and every one of them brings something different to the table.

Sarah Carr (Richmond) uses portraits to express the female identity. 

Rhiannon Doane (Chesterfield) challenges invincibility in her striking charcoal pieces. 

Sophia Johnston (Chesterfield) represents complex human relationships through abstract sculpture. 

Rosario Martinez recreates personal experiences through geometric sculpture and watercolor paintings.

Maggie MacCabe (Chesterfield) creates collages referencing personal development and identity. 

Rachel Myrick (Goochland) gives commentary on “urban sprawl” and environmental changes through sculptures made of newspaper. 

Ashley Nelson (Hanover) explores the relationships between colors in her intricate poured-paint pieces. 

Lilian Price (Richmond) depicts the many facets of humanity through a stylized photography series.

Art 5 

Grace Barron (Richmond) works in layers of watercolor and in the art of simplifying the complex. 

Kristin Hines' (Henrico) introspective illustrations show her own personal twist on the surreal and interpretive. 

Megan Lee (Chesterfield) explores colors and the human form through large-scale realistic portraits. 

Abbey Millar (Richmond) portrays quiet strength with her realistic graphite drawings. 

Kenan Potter (Richmond) takes pieces of people’s old stories and creates her own through found-objects. 

Eli Scaparo (Powhatan) documents the liminal spaces in his life through pen and ink drawings. 

SMOKE AND SCALES REMINDERS

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Governor's School alumna and Foundation volunteer Aliza Sterling (class of 2002) is seeking student volunteers to help the Bellevue Civic Association with their annual parade on MacArthur Avenue anywhere from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 9.  They will need the most volunteer help from 10:30 a.m.-noon.  The event benefits Toys for Tots.  Students who are interested should complete this google form and reach out to Aliza via email at aliza.sterling@gmail.com, including the word "volunteer" in the subject line.  Parents and/or students should feel free to reach out to Aliza with questions.  They need a lot of volunteer help and would love to have any MLWGS students who are interested and available on December 9!  Volunteers should sign up by December 7 so the organizers know how much help they can expect.

Please be sure to check each college’s priority filing dates for the FAFSA and CSS Profile (if required).

MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR THE 15TH ANNUAL NIGHT OF THE DRAGON! 

The 15th Annual Night of the Dragon--March Madness!--will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018, at the Hilton Richmond Hotel and Spa in Short Pump. 

This annual evening featuring food and spirits, a live and silent auction, great conversation, and amazing student entertainment; it is one of the social highlights of the year for Dragon parents, friends, alumni, and staff. As if that weren't enough, it's also the school's largest fundraiser- collectively benefiting the students at MLWGS by providing financial support to all booster groups, the PTSA, and the Governor’s School Foundation.

Help Make Night of the Dragon a Success!

The Night of the Dragon committee is looking for volunteers and auction donations from individuals and businesses.

Have you got something you can donate to help support our amazing school (and get a tax deduction for 2017 if you donate by December 31)? We need 375 auction items to help us reach our goals for fun and fundraising.

We are looking for all sorts of items- sports packages, trips, vacation homes, hotels, restaurants, gift baskets, spirits, services, you name it. The deadline for donations to be included in this year's event is January 12, 2018.

Not sure what to donate? Last year's catalogue 2017 Night of the Dragon Catalogue is still online to provide ideas but feel free to think of something new and unique too.
