Week of December 16, 2020

The editors of Smoke and Scales wish you Happy Holidays. We will "see" you in the new year! The next edition will be posted Jan. 6, 2021, and deadline for submissions will be Sunday, Jan. 3, by 4 p.m.

Winter Break Closure

This is just a reminder that the school building will be closed Dec. 21-Jan. 1 for winter break. While there may be some sports teams on campus for practices or games, the campus will be closed for business until we return in January.

Get to Know Naviance

Ms. Ebeling, school psychologist, and Ms. Cobb, sophomore and junior counselor, are pleased to announce a virtual classroom guidance opportunity for sophomore and junior students using Naviance: Naviance Family Connection, a web-based school counseling tool designed to assist students, parents, and counselors. Naviance contains several helpful advising tools that students can use during their four years of high school (see the MLW School Counseling Website for more details).

During January, students can participate in a virtual lesson using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and a career interest inventory.

Register to attend one of four sessions offered on Fridays, Jan. 15, 22, and 29 here. The deadline to register is Friday, Jan. 8.

Contact Ms. Cobb if you have questions. We look forward to seeing you!

Junior Newsletter Available

The MLWGS counseling team has created a (Special Edition) JUNIOR NEWSLETTER. (Younger Dragons are also encouraged to check it out, as some activities might also include underclassmen.) It’s filled with information about camps and conferences, contests and scholarships, internships and enrichment opportunities, and lots of other stuff for you to read and research as you prepare for second semester and the summer. Find it here. Look for "College Admissions Information" on the left, and then click on "Senior Newsletters." Students and their family members are invited to e-mail their MLWGS counselor with any questions.

PSAT Scores Now Available

Below is information on how to access and understand your October 2020 scores, as well as next steps.

Accessing Your Scores

When your PSAT/NMSQT scores are ready online, you'll get an email with instructions on creating your College Board account, going to your online score report, and using your access code to view your scores. If you already have a College Board account, please log into your existing account. Do not create a new account under the same name.

Please contact the College Board at 866-433-7728 if you have difficulty with accessing a College Board account you may have previously created. We do not have access to this information.

Understanding Your Scores

This video provides helpful information on how to interpret your test scores.

Next Steps

We suggest the following steps to prepare for the SAT:
  • Continue to take challenging courses in high school.
  • Link scores with Khan Academy and access free customized SAT practice.
  • Set up a practice plan and stick to it.
  • Register for the SAT.
Registering for the SAT
  • Most students take the SAT in the spring of junior year and again in the fall of senior year. We recommend the March 13 test date. The SAT will also be available on May 8 and June 5.
  • Please register for the SAT using your College Board account. Deadlines for registration are typically a month before the test date. We highly recommend registering early to ensure you are able to have a spot at a testing center in the case of test center cancellations due to COVID-19.
  • If you need assistance with paying for the SAT, please contact a school counselor.
SAT Subject Tests

SAT subject tests are hour-long assessments on individual subjects. You may pay to register for one, two, or three on the same Saturday morning (when you are not already taking the SAT). Typically only the most selective colleges require them for admissions, but now that so many are adopting "test-optional" policies, the need for them has diminished even further. Check the requirements for each of your prospective colleges before registering. Many students choose to test in the same subjects they are currently pursuing at the AP level, or the ones where they expect to show the most strength. Subject tests will take place on May 8 and June 5. For more information, visit the SAT site here.

College Board Opportunity Scholarships

The College Board Opportunity Scholarships offer nearly $5 million in scholarships each year as a way to reward you for your efforts to plan and pay for college. The program is currently open to the classes of 2021 and 2022. Find
more information
here.

Other Considerations

Students may wish to utilize other resources to research and develop the rest of their testing plan.

Students may wish to take the SAT multiple times and also consider taking the ACT, another college admissions test on which many MLWGS students have also been successful. Please note the most colleges are "test-optional" for the next couple of years and, with a few exceptions, students may choose which test scores they would like to share, or opt out of submitting test scores all together if they do not feel that their scores best reflect their abilities. However, certain programs may still require test scores, so we do encourage all juniors to take either the SAT or ACT to ensure they have all the necessary credentials to meet their future goals as they develop.

Week of December 9, 2020

Senior Newsletter Available

Issue #4 of the Senior Newsletter has been posted on the MLWGS School Counseling website.

Check it out for a message from the senior counselors to the Class of 2021 (along with an important, time-sensitive to-do list) and a variety of scholarships, college announcements and events, gap-year ideas, contests and enrichment activities, and multicultural opportunities. You are invited to explore Naviance for more details.

Community Service Requirement for Graduation

All parents of seniors should review community service totals with their student. The eligible community service hours total for graduation can be found on your report card, and a detailed list of hours can be found on x2vol (our online community service app.). Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the seniors' community service hours goal has been adjusted to 110 hours. As indicated on the first-quarter report card, seniors should have all of their 110 hours submitted by May 1, 2021. Students who have any questions about their hours totals or x2vol should contact Mr. Cook.

Announcement for Juniors and their Parents

As we near the end of the first semester, juniors need to begin thinking about their senior-year class schedule. One important course selection involves the Senior Seminar/Mentorship Program. Each junior must determine whether or not he or she wants to enroll in a seminar or to apply to the mentorship program. All juniors must also read about the seminars being offered next year and rank their top choices. Juniors should keep watch for a message on Schoology from Mr. Cook this week regarding Senior Seminar/Mentorship. A group will be started on Schoology for this year’s juniors to find all of the important information regarding the Seminar/Mentorship Program.

Parent Competition in Full Swing

Dragon parents are stepping up to the plate to see which class can achieve the highest parent percentage of Foundation Annual Fund supporters, and the competition is fierce! This year the class with the highest parent percentage will receive a special treat – TBD like so many things in 2020 – and we promise it will be awesome.

Totals as of Dec. 2 are as follows:
  • Senior parents (2021) 20%
  • Junior parents (2022) 30%
  • Sophomore parents (2023) 24%
  • Freshman parents (2024) 21%
The Governor's School Foundation Annual Fund makes a huge impact on all students at MLWGS. The support of our parents is critical in these efforts and we are most grateful for your continued commitment.

There are two more December order due dates before winter break through Great Lake Scrip. Help the MLWGS PTSA raise money doing your everyday and holiday shopping at no extra cost to you! Our last two order due dates before break are 12/7 and 12/14 for all of those last-minute shopping and dining needs. Restaurants and clothing stores tend to have big rebates. Cards will be delivered to you by the end of the week purchased. Go to shopwithscrip.com to shop.

We have already raised more than $600 since August 1 with just a small percentage of our families shopping. Questions? Contact Laura Dysart, or view our informational video.

MLWGS face masks are now available in the Dragon's Lair. These are adjustable and washable. Please check the store often as we are getting in new and updated items often. Thank you!

Due dates are 11/16, 12/7 and 12/14. Holiday shopping usually accounts for two-thirds of our annual income – please support this effort. You can also purchase e-certificates for participating retailers any time and receive them immediately. To shop or enroll go to shopwithscrip.com. View our informational video or contact your coordinator and class of 2021 parent, Laura Dysart.

Please sign up for one ticket per carload and be 100% sure you plan to attend. A DJ will provide music prior to both showings, pre-wrapped goodie bags will be distributed, and the Dragon’s Lair will have an outdoor booth for school swag purchases.

Tickets will be checked upon entering the student lot from Lombardy St. Security will then direct each car to a space. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the showing. Restrooms and hand-washing stations will be available. At all times, masks must be worn while outside a vehicle, and proper social distancing must be maintained.

MATH MODELING COMPETITION RESULTS!

This year MLWGS had four teams recognized as Finalist in the HiMCM math modeling contest.  The Finalist designation puts those four teams in the top 8% of the 938 teams competing worldwide giving us the best results that we’ve had in five years.

In this year’s competition, teams chose either to tackle a problem coordinating a cluster of 500 drones or a problem developing a ski resort based on a topographic map.  Teams were given 36 hours to write papers detailing their approach to their chosen problem.  A day-and-a-half’s worth of exhausting effort resulted in papers that averaged around 15 pages in length.  Thanks goes out to all twelve of the teams that participated.

The four Finalist teams were:

Team 7946:         Eric Campbell, Isabella Dula, Daniel Hall, Anuj Kotak
Team 7938:         Evan Donnellan, Will Larson, Tyler Stromberg, Nathan                                       Taminger
Team 7939:         Angela Chen, Lauren Hall, Hannah Lee, Abigail Olson
Team 7937:         Veronika Matysiak, Taha Shaikh, Yashodhara Varma

NEWS FROM THE COUNSELING OFFICE

Course registration for next year is coming up!

Returning students received course registration materials during assemblies last week.  In addition, the PTSA will host an Advanced Course Offerings and Course Registration Information Program for parents on February 8 starting at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium.  Department chairs and counselors will discuss course options and scheduling considerations.

Over the next several weeks, teachers will inform students of department course offerings and sequencing.  Counselors will meet with all students to complete Course Registration Worksheets which are to be brought home and shared with parents to help complete the Course Registration Form.  Students will need to  have the Course Registration Form and VCU Dual Enrollment Forms completed and signed including teacher approval for advanced classes in order to register for classes on March 8 during 2nd period.  If students do not have required teacher and parent signatures on these forms, students will not be permitted to register for classes on the March 8.

Student course request changes will be considered through the Spring semester but requests made after the end of the school year will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Please contact your student’s counselor if you have any questions.

MLWGS FOUNDATION UPDATE

The Foundation's Annual Fund Campaign supports several categories of enhancements at MLWGS.  One of those categories is student aid, which provides funding to offset or cover school-related expenses for students in financial need with the goal of increasing access to the opportunities MLWGS has to offer.  We’re happy to say that we’ve seen a significant increase in student aid grant applications submitted and funded this year, indicating a greater awareness of the resources we are glad to offer.  In the 2017-18 school year, student aid funding from the Foundation has covered almost $5000 worth of student fees for 23 students, club dues, field trip costs, college application costs, class-related travel expenses, and more.  As of February 1, 2018, we have spent over $15,000 on student aid with more spending to come.

So far this year, the Foundation's 2017-18 Annual Fund Campaign has raised $247,176, which is 75% of our $330,000 goal.  Overall current parent participation is 25%, and here is the parent participation by class:
  • Senior: 24%
  • Junior: 29%
  • Sophomore: 22%
  • Freshmen: 24%
The Governor’s School Foundation’s Annual Fund Campaign supports programs for students, grants for faculty continuing education, and special projects for facilities and equipment.  If you have not yet donated, you may do so online here.

Greg "Bear" O'Bryan, August 20, 1947 - October 11, 2014

The MLWGS community suddenly lost Greg (Bear) O’Bryan to a natural cause.  Bear’s unassuming nature, brilliant intellect, and caring demeanor combined to offer students a truly unique learning experience in the “Bear Cave”.  From making themes embedded in great literature relevant to students, to building quilts and personal anthologies, to sharing examples of his work as a talented artist, Bear helped students find their voice in unanticipated ways.  He will be missed.

PSAT Day is Wednesday October 15

All 9th, 10th and 11th graders will take the PSAT on the morning of Wednesday October 15, while 12th graders will be participate in college and transition-related activities in the auditorium.

The PSAT is a wonderful practice opportunity for the SAT.  For 11th graders, the PSAT results are used for qualification purposes for National Merit Scholarship Programs.

The counseling department distributed PSAT Student Guides to all test-takers during lunch-time assemblies during the week of Monday September 29th.   The guides contain information about the tests as well as a full-length practice test.  Students are encouraged to take the practice test before testing day.  More information about the PSAT can be found at www.collegeboard.org/psat.

Students are reminded to bring #2 pencils and calculators for testing.  The College Board does not allow makeup testing for the PSATs so it is important that students arrive at school on time.

Counselors will distribute score reports to students in mid-December through lunch-time grade-level assemblies.  Juniors will be encouraged to register for an SAT date in the Spring by using www.collegeboard.org.  Sophomores and Juniors in AP classes will be reminded to register for SAT Subject tests if appropriate.

MLWGS Receives Wells Fargo Cup for 2013-14 Athletics

MLWGS was among the schools that claimed a top spot in Virginia High School League athletic competition for the 2013-14 school year winning the coveted Wells Fargo Cup. First awarded in 1990, the Wells Fargo Cup goes to the school in each group classification (Groups 1A through 6A) that has achieved the best overall record in VHSL state-level competition in 27 sports – the state champions’ state champion.

MLWGS won the cup for the first time, taking the athletic honors in Group 2A with 485 points. The Dragons were a model of consistency throughout the year scoring 100 points in the fall; 195 points in the winter and 190 points in the spring.

Cups are presented for athletic and academic activities to the top school in each of the League’s enrollment groups.  The winner of the Wells Fargo Cup is determined by a point system based on performance in state-championship events.  Points are awarded for all sanctioned sports in the following manner:

First place                       50                    Fifth place                             30
Second place                   45                    Sixth place                             25
Third place                      40                    Seventh place                         20
Fourth place                    35                    Eighth place                            15

In the event of a tie, the schools received an equal number of points based on the number of schools that tie and the number schools that finish higher in the standings.  Schools earning the League’s Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award earn 50 points each.

“We congratulate all the schools who competed in this year’s VHSL championship events,” said Ken Tilley, VHSL executive director.  “We especially congratulate the best of the best and we thank Wells Fargo for supporting this important recognition.” The Wells Fargo Cup athletic and academic winners will be recognized during VHSL Day at a University of Virginia football game this fall in Charlottesville.
