Happy New Year and welcome back to school!

Counseling: Sophomores and Juniors

Ms. Ebeling, school psychologist, and Ms. Cobb, sophomore and junior counselor, announce a virtual classroom guidance opportunity for sophomore and junior students using Naviance: Naviance Family Connection, a web-based school counseling tool designed to assist students, parents, and counselors. Naviance contains several helpful advising tools that students can use during their four years of high school (see the MLWGS counseling website for details). During January, students can participate in a virtual lesson using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and a Career Interest Inventory.

Students may attend one of four sessions offered on Fridays, Jan. 15, 22, and 29, by registering here. The deadline to register is Friday, Jan. 8. Contact Ms. Cobb if you have questions.

Counseling: Juniors and Parents of Juniors

Soon juniors will meet with counselors to discuss their academic schedules for their senior year. One major decision they must make involves the Senior Seminar Program. At Maggie Walker, each senior must either enroll in a seminar class or apply to complete a mentorship to fulfill the senior seminar requirement. Information regarding this program and the selection process can be found on Schoology. Each junior has been admitted to a Schoology group called “The Senior Seminar/Mentorship Decision.” All juniors and their parents should visit this Schoology group to learn more about the Senior Seminar Program. This Schoology group provides descriptions of the seminar courses, mentorship application information, and deadlines for the decision-making process. If you have questions after visiting Schoology, please email Les Cook, the senior seminar/mentorship coordinator. The deadline for making the decision and ranking seminars is Monday, Jan. 18.

Scrip Still Sells

Don't forget to start or continue shopping with scrip so the PTSA can reach its scrip fundraising goal. So far this year, Great Lake Scrip has raised $1,058 for the MLWGS PTSA after shipping and incentives, with just 22 families participating. We hope to reach our goal of at least $1,500 before the school year ends. Please keep shopping! Even the smallest of rebates for your shopping and dining will add up by the end of the year. ALSO: Scrip needs a new PTSA Board Volunteer in Fall 2021

Have you been thinking you'd like to get more involved with MLWGS? Serving on the PTSA Board is a great way to get to know other MLWGS families while also helping the school and its programming. Laura Dysart's son is graduating, so we are looking for a new scrip coordinator. It is not a difficult program to manage, and there is a well developed work plan in place. Responsibilities include advertising through school media sources, placing monthly orders, and coordinating deliveries. Contact Laura for more information or to just talk more about what's involved. 

Zoom Lecture Explores Maggie Walker

On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the MW Library hosts a Zoom talk by historian Dr. Shennette Garrett-Scott, author of Banking on Freedom, a book in the Columbia Studies in the History of U.S. Capitalism series that features Maggie L. Walker. A free reading guide for the book is available from Columbia University Press. MLWGS students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni welcome! Registration link below. Winter Break Closure

This is just a reminder that the school building will be closed Dec. 21-Jan. 1 for winter break. While there may be some sports teams on campus for practices or games, the campus will be closed for business until we return in January.

Junior Newsletter Available

The MLWGS counseling team has created a (Special Edition) JUNIOR NEWSLETTER. (Younger Dragons are also encouraged to check it out, as some activities might also include underclassmen.) It’s filled with information about camps and conferences, contests and scholarships, internships and enrichment opportunities, and lots of other stuff for you to read and research as you prepare for second semester and the summer. Find it here. Look for "College Admissions Information" on the left, and then click on "Senior Newsletters." Students and their family members are invited to e-mail their MLWGS counselor with any questions.

PSAT Scores Now Available 

Below is information on how to access and understand your October 2020 scores, as well as next steps.

Accessing Your Scores

When your PSAT/NMSQT scores are ready online, you'll get an email with instructions on creating your College Board account, going to your online score report, and using your access code to view your scores. If you already have a College Board account, please log into your existing account. Do not create a new account under the same name.

Please contact the College Board at 866-433-7728 if you have difficulty with accessing a College Board account you may have previously created. We do not have access to this information.

Understanding Your Scores

Next Steps

We suggest the following steps to prepare for the SAT:

• Continue to take challenging courses in high school.
• Link scores with Khan Academy and access free customized SAT practice.
• Set up a practice plan and stick to it.
• Register for the SAT.

Registering for the SAT

• Most students take the SAT in the spring of junior year and again in the fall of senior year. We recommend the March 13 test date. The SAT will also be available on May 8 and June 5.
• Please register for the SAT using your College Board account. Deadlines for registration are typically a month before the test date. We highly recommend registering early to ensure you are able to have a spot at a testing center in the case of test center cancellations due to COVID-19.
• If you need assistance with paying for the SAT, please contact a school counselor.

SAT Subject Tests

SAT subject tests are hour-long assessments on individual subjects. You may pay to register for one, two, or three on the same Saturday morning (when you are not already taking the SAT). Typically only the most selective colleges require them for admissions, but now that so many are adopting "test-optional" policies, the need for them has diminished even further. Check the requirements for each of your prospective colleges before registering. Many students choose to test in the same subjects they are currently pursuing at the AP level, or the ones where they expect to show the most strength. Subject tests will take place on May 8 and June 5. For more information, visit the SAT site here.

College Board Opportunity Scholarships

The College Board Opportunity Scholarships offer nearly $5 million in scholarships each year as a way to reward you for your efforts to plan and pay for college. The program is currently open to the classes of 2021 and 2022. Find more information

Other Considerations

Students may wish to utilize other resources to research and develop the rest of their testing plan.

Students may wish to take the SAT multiple times and also consider taking the ACT, another college admissions test on which many MLWGS students have also been successful. Please note the most colleges are "test-optional" for the next couple of years and, with a few exceptions, students may choose which test scores they would like to share, or opt out of submitting test scores all together if they do not feel that their scores best reflect their abilities. However, certain programs may still require test scores, so we do encourage all juniors to take either the SAT or ACT to ensure they have all the necessary credentials to meet their future goals as they develop.

NINE DAYS UNTIL THE FALL FESTIVAL!

Come one, come all to the 21st annual MLWGS Fall Festival on October 6 from 4-8:00 p.m! It is an international event sponsored by the PTSA to directly showcase and financially support MLWGS student organizations! Held on the front steps and lawn of the school facing Lombardy Street, the Fall Festival offers a wide variety of activities, entertainment, and food.

The Festival is open to all- current students, their families, younger siblings, former students and families, neighborhood residents, and friends of the school!

There is no admittance charged for the festival and all the entertainment, provided by our very talented students is free! Tickets are sold to purchase all items for sale- crafts, games, entrees, desserts, drinks, and more!

If your organization would like to become a sponsor, the deadline is quickly approaching!

We need you to volunteer! The Festival relies on volunteers to help with the many jobs including set up, booth support, PTSA drink sales, crowd control, ticket sales and counting, and tear down. Parent support is critical to the success of the Festival and students can earn community service hours. Parent volunteers will be needed on October 6 starting at 9 a.m. before the Festival for setup, during the Festival, and afterwards for clean up. The PTSA also needs to borrow some items to help keep the cost down. Pre-purchase Tickets! Last year lines to buy tickets were long, but picking up pre-ordered tickets was fast and easy! The Committee strongly encourages everyone to pre-order tickets using the form below! Although we recommend 15-20 tickets per student, 10 tickets will buy a good meal and pay for a one or two of activities or yummy treats. Also remember, except for Dragon's Lair, booths only accept tickets and only cash is accepted for tickets the day of the festival!

Remember going to information night in middle school to learn about Maggie Walker? ATTENTION SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS

Do you want to learn more about Japanese language and culture? Make new friends from across the nation and around the world? Spend part of your summer at Princeton University? Have the best 10 days of your life? Then apply to the High School Diplomats cultural exchange program! All current sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply. This is a truly unique and unforgettable experience. Participants share American culture and learn about Japanese culture through festivals, discussions, and classes (don’t worry- there are no grades involved and you don’t have to know any Japanese). They also get to room with a Japanese student and form a lifelong, cross-cultural bond.

The online application can be found at www.highschooldiplomats.com and is currently open. The deadline for application submission is January 8, 2018. Selected applicants will be notified by mid-February to schedule an interview. Interviews (in-person or Skype depending on location) will take place between late February and March. SENIOR PORTRAITS
Due to overwhelming demand, in-school senior portraits have MOVED to Monday, October 9. New, additional time slots are now available. Seniors wishing to be photographed should sign up outside Room 330. Seniors' time slots from the old October 11 sheet have been preserved, EXCEPT for those who signed up between 12 and 12:30 or after 3:00 p.m. Those seniors have new time slots, so please check the new list. Seniors who cannot make their assigned time slot may change it or swap with a classmate. See Mr. White mwhite@gsgis.k12.va.us if you have any questions. These free portraits are tux and drape only; additional poses, outfits and backgrounds involve fees.

If you would rather be photographed for your formal yearbook portrait at another studio, be sure that your portraits adhere to the following specifications:

It's not too early to plan for school pictures! All underclass portraits will be taken by Strawbridge on September 20-21. Students will be escorted to the Black Box during their English classes. If you wish to order pictures, please pick up an order form from Ms. Bowman (attendance) or Mr. White (Room 330). All orders MUST be prepaid. Makeups will be on November 2.

Strawbridge will be shooting portraits at MLWGS on October 11. This Strawbridge date is for the traditional drape/tux format and is FREE.  Additional photos (poses, outfits, etc.) are available for a $25 fee. 

If you cannot make this date, please contact our Strawbridge representative, Scott Johnson sjohnson@strawbridge.net as you can be photographed at another school. He will provide a list of alternative locations and dates. 

If your senior will not be photographed by Strawbridge, PLEASE be sure that your portraits adhere to the following specifications:

Attention Students and Parents Interested in the University of Virginia!

MLWGS has been selected to host a regional information session on the University of Virginia on Tuesday, September 12 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the MLWGS Auditorium. UVA admissions representatives Christy Pratt and Kelsey Bowles will present on the programs offered at the university as well as admissions requirements and processes. While students/parents of all grade levels may attend, the presentation will be geared toward juniors and seniors. Juniors and Seniors are encouraged (but not required) to sign up in Naviance following the directions in the “College Visits” announcement below (sign-ups are visible to MLWGS counseling staff only). Because this is a regional event, UVA has invited prospective students from all across Richmond and the surrounding area. Note: UVA will not be scheduling a traditional college visit during school hours this year.

College Visits at Maggie Walker:

Over 80 colleges and universities are scheduled to visit students at MLWGS over the course of the fall. Juniors and Seniors are encouraged to attend these visit sessions for colleges that interest them and learn more about other schools of which they are not familiar. During these visits, admissions representatives will review the programs offered at their school as well as answer questions about the admissions process and any other topics. Smaller colleges are often hoping to get to know some of their perspective students personally and may provide their contact information for follow up questions. We have tried to arrange college visits for 11:30 a.m. (lunch time) whenever possible and most of them will take place in the Counseling Office. For any college visit that is NOT offered during lunch time (most are), students MUST complete a green College Meeting Pass and have it signed by a teacher PRIOR to the class they would miss. The college meeting passes are located on Ms. Hicks' desk in the Counseling Office lobby.

Students can either view a complete list of the colleges that will be visiting in Naviance or check the hard copy lists that will be posted on the bulletin boards around school. You can view/sign up for a college visit in Naviance under the "colleges" tab and by clicking "view all upcoming visits" on the right hand side of the screen under "Upcoming college visits." Then click "sign up" next to any sessions you plan to attend. Signing up is not mandatory, but extremely helpful for finding the appropriately sized space.
