MLWGS REGIONAL SCHOOL BOARD MEETING AND

FY18 BUDGET PUBLIC HEARING

MARCH 16, 2017

The regularly scheduled meeting of the Maggie Walker Governor's School Regional Board will be held on March 16, 2017, 9:00 a.m., in Room 153, on the MLWGS campus. A public hearing on the FY18 budget proposal is also included in this meeting.

Persons wishing to address the Regional School Board are required to contact the Board Clerk for placement on the agenda. In order to address the Regional School Board, the speaker must provide the Clerk with a summary of his/her comments by 10:00 a.m. on the last business day prior to the meeting at which he or she desires to be heard.

In lieu of comments during the public hearing, the Regional School Board will also accept input via online comments here through April 15, 2017.  Comments should pertain to the FY18 proposed budget only; inappropriate remarks will be removed.

MLWGS GENERAL PTSA MEETING – COLLEGE OVERVIEW

Please plan to attend the March General PTSA meeting on Monday, March 20 from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. in Room 153 at MLWGS.  The meeting is open to parents of all students, but is especially geared toward parents of Freshman and Sophomores, so that they can help plan schedules, activities, clubs, community service etc. to best fit their student's interests and college goals. The Senior Class Counselors, Penny Deck and Rachael Loving, will provide an overview of the college search/application/admission process at Maggie Walker and offer an opportunity for a few questions.  The counselors at Maggie Walker are fabulous; don't miss this informative session!

ATTENTION SENIOR PARENTS!

The March Senior Newsletter is now available on the School Counseling Website (https://sites.google.com/a/gsgis.k12.va.us/mlw-school-counseling/2011-2012-newsletters). This newsletter contains college-related reminders and a listing of scholarships with approaching deadlines. The latest newsletter was distributed to students in their English classes last week. Scholarship information for seniors is also available on the School Counseling website (https://sites.google.com/a/gsgis.k12.va.us/mlw-school-counseling/college-admissions-information-1/scholarships-financial-aid) and in Naviance (https://connection.naviance.com/mlwgs). Contact your child’s counselor if you would like to view the Naviance scholarship database and need your registration code. Scholarships are still being added to this database on a monthly basis, most with direct links to the applications. Hard-copy applications are scanned and attached to the scholarship description as a PDF. Please note that all deadlines posted on Naviance or in the Newsletter are subject to change as organizations are still sending us updated information for this school year. THE ROBERT E. AND JACQUELINE POGUE SCHOLARSHIP

APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE!

The Robert E. and Jacquelyn Pogue Scholarship annually recognizes a Maggie Walker senior by an award of $3,000 per year for the first two years of their college experience. Selection criteria includes demonstration of a strong interest in the study of history, government and politics, an ability to achieve in a well-rounded academic program, proven leadership ability, and a strong commitment to community service. Financial need will be considered, although it is not a primary factor. Part I of the application can be picked up in the Counseling Office beginning March 21, 2017. An information session for interested seniors will be held Wednesday, March 21 in the College Center (Counseling Office) during lunch starting at 11:40. Please turn in Part I of the application to Dr. Loving by April 18 at 12:30 p.m. Semi-finalists will be given Part II of the application which will be due April 28 at 3:30 p.m. Finalists will be interviewed in mid-May.

GRANDPARENTS DAY

The Foundation is excited to announce its annual Grandparents Day on Friday, April 21! This is an afternoon event where we invite current students' grandparents (or other special family members and friends) to learn a little about our school, take a brief tour, and have a reception with their grandchildren. It's a popular event and a lot of fun!

The only way we can invite these special family members is if you provide their contact information! If you've provided this information in a previous school year, we already have that and can use it to contact your child's grandparents. If that information has changed and needs to be updated in any way, please email the changes.

Most importantly, if your child is a freshman and you’ve never sent any grandparent contact information from you, please email events@mlwgsfoundation.org with the following:

• Name and graduation year of your current student(s)
• Name(s) of all grandparents or special family members to invite
• Full street address with city, state, and ZIP code
• Current email address (if they routinely use email)

Printed invitations will be mailed to all invitees in a few weeks and followed up with an email reminder. If you're in touch with those family members soon, please ask them to save the date of April 21 for this special event!

MUSICAL DRAGONS SHINE

Congratulations to Andrew Shin (’18, Henrico) for earning the 9th viola seat in the All State Orchestra based on his audition Saturday, February 25 at James Madison University.  Qualifying for All State Orchestra is the pinnacle ensemble achievement for high school musicians. The All State Orchestra Event is April 6-8 at Colgan High School in Northern Virginia.

Congratulations too to Maggie Walker Orchestra students for their performance at the District Orchestra Assessment Festival March 9 at Short Pump Middle School. The Orchestra I class earned ratings of Excellent and Superior for an overall rating of Excellent, and the Orchestra II class earned ratings of straight Superiors for an overall rating of Superior on music of the highest grade of difficulty. Ensembles are adjudicated based on their performance of prepared titles and sight-reading (performing a piece of music as the first run-through without any prior rehearsal). The music performed is graded by degree of difficulty on a scale of I-VI, VI being the most difficult. Orchestra I performed grade IV and Orchestra II performed grade VI.

YOUTH ART MONTH

Youth Art Month is when MLWGS takes time to highlight the wonderful and talented young artists at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School. To celebrate, MLWGS will be having its annual student art exhibition which opens Thursday, March 10 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the 2nd floor main hallway at Maggie Walker. Students enrolled in Photography and other Visual Arts classes will have a piece exhibited in this exhibition.  The show will run through March and the opening is open to the public.  We hope that you will be able to attend.  Light refreshments will be provided by the Visual Arts Boosters.  

SOL WRITING TESTS

All sophomores will be taking the SOL Writing Tests in two parts during the week of March 14.  On Monday and Tuesday, tenth graders will take the multiple-choice section of the test during English classes.  On Wednesday and Thursday, students will take the writing portion during English classes.  Because the writing portion of the test may take longer than a full class period, sophomores in periods 7 and 8 English classes will need to start the writing prompt during periods 5 and 6.  They will be excused from their regular 5th and 6th period classes.  Makeup testing will take place on Friday morning of the same week.

All other End of Course SOL tests will be held during the last two weeks in May.  MLWGS SOL testing occurs in the following courses:  biology, chemistry, geometry, Algebra II, 11th-grade English (Reading test), Global Studies 10 (World History), and US and VA History.  SOL practice questions are available at the Virginia Department of Education website: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/practice_items/index.shtml

MLWGS GRANDPARENTS' DAY, FRIDAY, APRIL 15

MLWGS grandparents and special friends of the family, including aunts, uncles, godparents, and neighbors, are invited to attend the fifth annual Grandparents' Day on Friday, April 15.  This popular event, sponsored by the Governor's School Foundation, will run from 2:00 – 3:45 p.m. All attendees will be invited to hear a presentation about the school, take a short tour of the building, and attend a reception with their grandchildren.

KOLOR ME KATIE 5K

The Kolor Me Katie 5K, in memory of Dragon Katie Anderson, is being held on May 21, 2016 at the Goochland YMCA. This year’s race benefits Connor’s Heroes Foundation and the Goochland YMCA Leaders’ Club. Last year’s inaugural race had around 300 runners and raised more than $7,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (last year’s beneficiary).

RELEVANCE RISING STUDENTS WILL TRAVEL TO GUATEMALA

Will Provide Services to the Village of Tzununá

Relevance Rising (RR) is a class dedicated to the study of non-profit organizations and has been involved with an international service project for the community center and library of Tzununá, Guatemala for several years. Through this project, students learn to develop understanding and the skills necessary to interact with peoples of a different culture. In September 2015, the current class began fundraising with bake sales, coin drives, door decorating, salsa sales, etc., with all proceeds going to support the Tzununá library project. This year students will take with them in late March over $4,500 in donations. This marks the class’s fifth trip to the region and a total over the years of contributions of approximately $20,000 in monies and materials. Their donations have covered the cost of land to house the library, engineer and architect designs, building materials and various resources such as computers to be used by the children of the village. However, the project is still $10,000 short.

  

Trip expenses are funded by the MLWGS students themselves, along with the gracious help and support of the Governor’s School Foundation.

GSMUN XIX: WAKE THE NATIONS, MARCH 11-12, 2016

Maggie Walker’s 19th annual Model United Nations conference, GSMUN, will take place on March 11-12, 2016.  The event, consisting of 22 independent committees, expects to bring in delegates from 30+ schools across Virginia and Maryland.  Over 600 middle and high school students will debate policy issues ranging from the role of the aristocracy in 14th century Japan to the ethics of modern stem-cell research. 

GSMUN strives to promote awareness of international issues in our community.  Headed by a student Secretariat, GSMUN is also dedicated to raising money for global charities.  Model United Nations students from all grade levels participate in school fundraisers, culminating in conference donations and merchandise sales during the weekend of GSMUN.  This year, GSMUN XIX will raise money for One Hundred Pounds of Hope, an organization that provides education and emergency relief to the people of Cambodia.  Already, the students have coordinated three bake sales, candy gram sales, and a benefit concert featuring international cuisine and student performers. 

The theme of this year’s conference is Wake the Nations.  Much of the current leadership team has participated in Model UN all four years at Maggie Walker, and several even attended GSMUN as middle schoolers.  If you have any questions or would like to volunteer at the event, contact John Metz (gsmun.secgen@gmail.com) or Mr. Smith (msmith@gsgis.k12.va.us) for more details!

COUNSELING SERVICES AVAILABLE

The MLWGS School Counseling Department would like to extend its sympathy to the family and classmates of Isabell McKinney. Izzy was an exceptional young person whose presence and contributions will be missed by all of us. For the first couple of days after Izzy’s death, Richmond Public Schools psychologists and social workers assisted the School Counseling office in supporting students.  Students have also done a wonderful job supporting each other. MLWGS will be forming lunchtime grief support groups for those students who may need extra assistance. We hope to start these groups before leaving for Winter Break. Please contact your student’s counselor if you feel a group would be helpful for your child.

NIGHT OF THE DRAGON DONATIONS WELCOME

The 14th  Annual Night of the Dragon auction will be held Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Hilton Hotel & Spa at Short Pump. This annual event is the largest fundraiser of the year and collectively benefits the students at MLWGS through activities provided by all of the booster groups, the PTSA, and the Governor’s School Foundation. The solicitation committee is collecting donations of auction items.

GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL FOUNDATION SEEKS PART-TIME FISCAL ASSISTANT

The Governor's School Foundation has an immediate opening for a part-time fiscal assistant.  This position is responsible for maintaining and updating certain fiscal records for the Foundation, whose mission is to support  MLWGS .  The Fiscal Assistant plays an important role by providing financial accountability and administrative support to the Foundation.

Qualifications include proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, database management experience (eTapestry preferred) and knowledge of accounting/bookkeeping software (Quickbooks preferred.)

LAST SCRIP ORDER BEFORE BREAK

Yes, it's true. There is only one SCRIP order date left before the holiday break. If you are trying to think of the perfect gift for that special someone, consider a SCRIP gift card! The final scrip order due date before the holidays is Tuesday, December 1. Cards will be delivered to school the following Tuesday, December 8. SCRIP order forms can be picked up in the Bluestone Lobby office or can be downloaded from the MW website. SOL TESTING INFORMATION

SOL Testing for freshmen who attended private middle schools will take place during the week of Monday December 7.  Specific testing times and locations were distributed to these students last week.  

All students at MLWGS are required to pass nine SOL End-of-Course tests in order to qualify for a Virginia Advanced Studies High School Diploma.  MLWGS students typically earn SOL verified credits for Biology, Chemistry, World History II (given at the end of 10th grade), US History (10th or 11th grade), English writing (10th grade), English reading (11th grade), Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.

Students who attended private middle schools need to verify earned credit through SOL tests for Algebra I, Geometry, and/or Algebra II classes taken.

Students are encouraged to go to the Virginia Department of Education site http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/practice_items/index.shtml  to review materials to prepare for the tests.  In addition, students may ask their current math teacher for additional help.  Finally, the math tutoring lab is open after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for help with specific content.

Students will have a practice opportunity to use the online math tools during lunch on Monday, November 30 in lab 201.  It is highly recommended that all students attend this practice session since it is important to be able to use the tools effectively during online testing.  Students with last names A-H should report at the start of lunch and last names K-Z should report at noon.

SOL tests are scored as fail, pass/proficient or advanced/college path.  If a student fails the SOL, he or she is permitted to take an expedited re-take if the score is between 375 and 399.  This re-take will be scheduled within a couple of weeks of the initial testing date.  If a student fails the re-test, he or she will have an opportunity to retake the test in May.  The scores are not used for college admissions purposes and are only used for verifying credits.

MLWGS STUDENT HONORED BY NICKELODEON

Ethan Cruikshank (Hanover ‘16) has been named a 2015 Nickelodeon HALO (Helping and Leading Others) honoree for his efforts with his community service organization Music To My Ears. The organization, which he founded in 2009, offers free weekly musical instrument lessons to elementary school-age children taught by experienced musicians in middle and high school. His program also provides instruments to children that are unable to obtain a practice instrument so they too can participate. Now in its seventh year, Music To My Ears has spread to neighboring communities and three additional states. Through the efforts of the volunteers, more than 1800 hours of service has been provided to their communities. As a benefit of being a HALO honoree, Ethan received a college scholarship and support for his organization. He is thrilled to be among the four honored this year at the HALO TV awards show which airs on Nickelodeon on November 29 at 7:00 p.m.

MLWGS ORCHESTRA STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN

SOUTH CENTRAL SENIOR REGIONAL ORCHESTRA

Qualifying for selection into the prestigious event requires a thorough blind audition process that takes place each year in September. More than two-thirds of those who audition will not qualify. At stake is the opportunity to perform in a one-hundred piece symphony orchestra under the direction of an acclaimed guest conductor. Participants also gain eligibility to audition for an even higher and more competitive honor: All Virginia Orchestra. This year’s SRO event transpired November 11-12 at Glen Allen High School.  Maestro Scott Laird, Fine Arts Coordinator and Instructor of Music at The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, conducted works by Tchaikovsky and Smetana. Congratulations to Rachel Zhao (Henrico ‘18,), 6th Cello, Willow Kwak (Henrico ‘18,), 10th First Violin, and Andrew Shin (Henrico ’18), 1st Viola (pictured left to right).

PART-TIME FISCAL ASSISTANT
