DOCUMENTARY FILM THIS SUNDAY

\

Do stories of those overcoming great adversity inspire you? Would you like to understand the challenges of poverty and violence that plague our Central American neighbors?   Do you wonder what it would be like to live and go to school in a compound surrounded by concrete walls and serpentine wire? Are you curious about poetry writing as a means to healing? If you answered yes to any of these, then check out the documentary, Voices Beyond the Wall: Twelve Love Poems from the Murder Capital of the World showing at the Byrd Theatre this Sunday, October 15. This moving documentary follows a priest and poet who travels to Our Little Roses Home for Girls (OLR) in Honduras to help orphaned girls find their voices in poetry, heal traumas of their past, and prepare for an uncertain future.

Grace Locke ('19, Richmond) has been going to OLR in Honduras for three years. “When I went the first time I was overwhelmed by the poverty in Honduras and nervous about meeting the girls at OLR.  I had been given so much relative to these girls who had been abused and abandoned.  What could we possibly have in common?”  She soon found out: love. “These girls mean the world to me. They are full of strength and hope, and are part of my family now."

When Grace returned from Honduras last year, she decided she wanted to do more for her friends at OLR, so she is bringing Voices to RVA as a fundraiser on Sunday, October 15 at 4:30 p.m.  Tickets to the film are only $12, and all sales and donations go to OLR’s post-high school education fund. For more information, including the film trailer, you can click on the Eventbrite link below or visit the Facebook event page.

Please join us at next week's General PTSA meeting, to be held on Tuesday, October 17 at 8 a.m. in room 153. The meeting will be hosted by Maggie Walker's Senior Counselors and GRASP Financial Aid Advisor Susan Teerlink, presenting important information about applying for college financial aid. With the FAFSA recently released, it is a great time to learn about the process and have your questions answered. The presentation will be geared toward Junior and Senior parents, but is open to all. We hope to see you there!

CONGRATULATIONS CHESS TEAM

Congratulations to the Maggie Walker Squad- John Corson ('20, Chesterfield), Trey Johnson ('18, Richmond), Varun Natarajan ('20, Henrico), Kevin Ren ('20, Chesterfield), and Nicholas Xie ('20, Henrico) for going 5-0 against Deep Run in our first Greater Richmond High School Chess League match today! Follow our team's progress at http://www.grhscl.org/  Go Dragons!

ATTENTION SENIOR PARENTS

All seniors should plan to meet with their senior counselor within the next month if they have not done so already. If there are no timeslots available on the sign-up sheet in the Counseling Center, students should reach out directly to their counselor to schedule a meeting.

A description of all scholarship opportunities sent to MLWGS can be found on Naviance. Please note that this list is not exhaustive- students are still encouraged to do their own scholarship research. See the “Scholarship and Financial Aid” page of the School Counseling website for tips. All deadlines listed in Naviance are subject to change- MLWGS is not always notified of annual date changes; therefore, it is important that students confirm all deadlines on the scholarship organization’s direct website. Please contact Kierstin Streitel in the School Counseling Office with any scholarship questions.

Teacher Recommendation Request forms are due at least two “school” weeks prior to the college/program deadline (winter break not included). Extra forms are in the School Counseling Office.

Transcript Request forms for deadlines November 15 or earlier were due last week. A Transcript Request Form is due to counselors by 3:30 p.m. on November 15 for any deadlines November 16 or later. Extra forms are in the School Counseling Office.

Students are allowed four excused absences for college visits per year. Students must get and turn back in a pre-approval form to Ms. Bowman in advance. Students should let their teachers know ahead of time that they will be missing class and it is up to them to inquire about and complete any missed work.

NEWS FROM THE GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL FOUNDATION

The Governor's School Foundation Board of Directors has approved $20,000 worth of student aid for use in the 2017-18 school year.  Student aid can be used to pay for everything from semester fees to class-related travel expenses to SAT/ACT reporting fees for students in financial need.  If you are interested in accessing student aid funding, contact Dr. Wendy Ellis, Associate Director of Curriculum and Instruction.  The administration screens all requests for student aid, and the identity of the student is always kept anonymous.  Please do not hesitate to ask Dr. Ellis if you believe your student could benefit from student aid funding.  It is there to open up opportunities at MLWGS!

ATHLETIC BOOSTERS CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

The Maggie Walker Athletic Boosters Club has formed several committees and is looking for additional volunteers to serve on the committees. The committees will be making recommendations for consideration by the Athletic Boosters Board. The committees and the Board will be working with Activities Director Paige Hawkins. Serving on one of the committees is a great way for parents to get involved at the school and support our student-athletes. Brief descriptions of the committees are provided below. Please contact Athletic Boosters President Rich Schweiker at dukeschweikers@aol.com to your express interest in serving on one of the committees or to get more information.

Facilities Assessment - Assess both off-site and on-site facilities for each sport.

Regional School Board Funding Assessment - Assess to what extent the increased funding from the Regional School Board is sufficiently covering Athletic Department operating expenses.

Equipment Assessment - Assess current equipment needs of all teams.

Membership - Consider ways to promote involvement and increase membership.

Athlete Recognition - Consider ways to improve the recognition of our student-athletes.

Advocacy - Advocate for athletic interests within and outside the school.

MAD KINGS! SAVAGE QUEENS! KNIGHTS AND DRAGONS! TROPHIES! TRAVEL!

Come to room 111 at lunch on Thursday, September 21, to learn more about the exciting world of Dragon Chess! All are welcome, no chess experience required.

DID YOU KNOW MLWGS IS CLASSIFIED AS A "PROGRAM" AND NOT A HIGH SCHOOL?

PTSA Advocacy invites all interested parents to a meeting September 26 from 7:00-8:30 PM in room 153 to hear how Maggie Walker is funded by the state and the localities who send students to this school. As a “stand-alone school district” learn about the board that oversees Maggie Walker, and the complexities of maintaining an all-inclusive curriculum, building and grounds for gifted high school students from 12 localities. Hear the differences between a comprehensive high school and a program, and how the three full day Governor’s Schools (MLWGS , Appomattox Regional, and Thomas Jefferson Science and Technology) are trying to provide the best possible well-rounded high school experience for your talented student. Understand how the school can lose or gain funding and how parents can speak up. Learn about our annual MLWGS Legislative Breakfast and Capital Day; both activities provide an opportunity for our students to interact with senators and delegates at school and on Capital Square.

YEARBOOK PICTURES - FRESHMEN, SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS

Underclass Yearbook portraits will be shot by Strawbridge Studios at school on Wednesday and Thursday, September 20-21. Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors will travel to the Black Box with their English classes.

So if they have English on an odd day, they’ll be photographed on Wednesday; if even, on Thursday. Those wishing to order pictures must visit Ms. Bowman in Attendance or Mr. White in Room 330 to pick up an order form. All orders must be prepaid and brought to the photographer on the appropriate Picture Day. (Makeups will be on Nov. 2.) Please contact Michael White at mwhite@gsgis.k12.va.us if you have questions.

DECIPHER HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS AND EARN COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS
The Maggie Walker Library will be hosting monthly Transcribe-a-thons this year in partnership with the Library of Virginia’s Transcribe project, a crowdsourced transcription project “documenting over 400 years of Virginia history, people, and culture.”

This is the perfect opportunity for students to dive into the Library of Virginia’s collections AND earn community service hours right here at MLWGS. “From peace to wartime, court records to letters home, and conspiracies to political statements, there will be something for everyone.”

If you’re interested, mark your calendars AND stop by the MW Library to reserve your spot for a training session with Sonya Coleman, Digital Collections Specialist for the Library of Virginia, on Thursday, September 21, from 3:45pm to 4:45pm.

She’ll give an overview of Transcribe, the types of historical documents in need of transcription, and tips for transcription, then participants will dive into the archives and start decoding documents. She’ll also have free LVA bling!

In October through May of this school year, Ms. DeGroat will host a Transcribe-a-thon in the library after school on the second Wednesday of each month (October through May) from 3:30-5pm. There will also be an opportunity to transcribe at designated tables in the library during lunch the next day.

For enthusiastic volunteers, LVA holds similar events each month hosted by HandsOnRVA, and volunteers with a Transcribe account can decode documents from home too.

If you have questions, stop by the library or email Ms. DeGroat at wdegroat@gsgis.k12.va.us.

YEARBOOK STAFF SEEKS SUMMER PICTURES FROM STUDENTS

The Yearbook staff would LOVE to see your pictures-- of summer fun, jobs, community service, hobbies, or anything else you've been up to.

Please go to http://www.hjeshare.com/eShare/?code=MLWGS and upload your pictures.

Questions? Email Mr. White at mwhite@gsgis.k12.va.us.

We look forward to seeing how you spend your time!

SUPPORT CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS AT THE FALL FESTIVAL ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6TH!

Come one; come all to the 21st annual MLWGS Fall Festival! It is an international event sponsored by the PTSA to directly showcase and financially support MLWGS student organizations! Held on the front steps and lawn of the school facing Lombardy Street, the Fall Festival offers a wide variety of activities, entertainment, and food.

The Festival is open to all- current students, their families, younger siblings, former students and families, neighborhood residents, and friends of the school!

There is no admittance charged for the festival and all the entertainment, provided by our very talented students is free! Tickets are sold to purchase all items for sale- crafts, games, entrees, desserts, drinks, and more!

Be sure to “Like” the Fall Festival Page on Facebook to get the latest information about what is planned and what volunteer opportunities exist (www.facebook.com/MLWGSFallFestival).

Sponsorship needed - Deadline Wednesday, September 27th!
To keep costs down – and keep more money in the coffers of MLWGS student organizations- the MLWGS PTSA is looking for corporate or individual sponsors. The goal this year is $2000. Each year our Fall Festival grows, and with that growth new tables and tents are purchased. Funds from sponsors go to purchasing these items. Gold sponsorship entails a donation of $500 and Silver Sponsors donate $250. Smaller donations are also accepted and greatly appreciated. If you would like to make a donation, please email Kathy Staley at Kathleen.staley@comcast.net.

Volunteers Wanted!
The Festival relies on volunteers to help with the many jobs including set up, booth support, PTSA drink sales, crowd control, ticket sales and counting, and tear down. Parent support is critical to the success of the Festival and students can earn community service hours. Parent volunteers will be needed on October 6 starting at 9 a.m. before the Festival for setup, during the Festival, and afterwards for clean up. The PTSA also needs to borrow some items to help keep the cost down. More information about volunteering and donating items is posted on the Fall Festival Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/MLWGSFallFestival) and will be posted next week in Smoke and Scales.

Pre-Purchase Tickets!
Last year lines to buy tickets were long, but picking up pre-ordered tickets was fast and easy! The Committee strongly encourages everyone to pre-order tickets using the form below! Although we recommend 15-20 tickets per student, just 10 tickets will buy a good meal and pay for a one or two of activities or some yummy treats. Also remember, except for Dragon's Lair, booths only accept tickets and only cash are accepted for tickets the day of the festival!

SENIOR PORTRAITS

Due to overwhelming demand, in-school senior portraits have MOVED to Monday, October 9. New, additional time slots are now available. Seniors wishing to be photographed should sign up outside Room 330. Seniors' time slots from the old October 11 sheet have been preserved, EXCEPT for those who signed up between 12 and 12:30, or after 3:00 p.m. Those seniors have new time slots, so those students should find their names on the brand new list. Seniors who cannot make their assigned time slot may change it or swap with a classmate. See Mr. White mwhite@gsgis.k12.va.us if you have any questions. These free portraits are tux and drape only; additional poses, outfits and backgrounds involve fees.

If you’d rather be photographed for your formal Yearbook portrait at another studio, be sure that your portraits adhere to the following specifications:

a. formal dress (tux or drape)
b. "midnight blue" or other standard, dark blue or black background
c. photo should be head and shoulders, with the bottom of frame hitting mid-chest level. Any size from Strawbridge [2-15/16" x 2-3/16" OR 2-3/16" x 1-5/8" OR 1-15/16" x 1-7/16"] is fine.

Photos from other studios are due no later than Friday, November 17. If we do not have your picture by November 17, you risk exclusion from the senior section. Please give Mr. White a copy of the photo if it is NOT the contracted school photographer. Digital images must be at least 300 dpi and can be emailed tomwhite@gsgis.k12.va.us or delivered on a CD or flash drive to Mr. White. If you email an image, please send a separate email to follow up to make sure we received the email. (We may need to provide a different email address for larger images.)

Foundation Supports Music Program

Orchestra teacher Karl von Klein had a problem with the layout of his classroom.  Columns in the music room blocked some students’ views, and they were unable to see the dry erase boards at the front of the classroom. That problem has now been solved, with the installation of two HDTV monitors mounted on those same formerly problematic columns.

With funding from a Foundation Enhancement Grant, Mr. von Klein was able to purchase not only the HDTVs, but also an iPad Air and Apple TV. The music room is now a high-tech learning space, with capabilities far beyond just the two monitors.  Wireless projection of audio/visual content allows music students to learn in an entirely new way.

For instance, Karl recently wrote to us: “Using the iPad camera as a video recorder…I can now show the students anything the camera sees on the TVs. I can show their parts on the conductor’s score and how it functions with other parts…I don’t have to waste time copying a rhythm to the board; I can show it to the whole class instantly, further preserving valuable rehearsal time.”

Without generous support of the Governor’s School Foundation, classroom enhancements such as this one would be a dream, not a reality.

Your contributions to the Foundation Annual Fund help bring cutting-edge technology and teaching to MLWGS students.  So far this year, the Annual Fund Campaign has raised $276,732 for the school. Overall current parent participation is 43%, and here is the parent participation by class:

• Seniors: 42%
• Juniors: 38%
• Sophomores: 49%
• Freshmen: 46%

NOMINATE A SPECIAL MLWGS VOLUNTEER!

The PTSA will be honoring two very special MLWGS volunteers at the MLWGS End-of-Year Volunteer event hosted by the Governor's School Foundation on Tuesday, May 26, 2015.

For each award, the PTSA is seeking nominations for outstanding parent volunteers who offer their time to PTSA, Booster groups, the Foundation, or in any other school-support capacity.

The MLWGS relies heavily on the support of so many, and there are countless ways for volunteers to get involved. Therefore the PTSA has created two uniquely different awards: The Green Dragon Award for a visible and active member of the volunteer community; and The Dragon’s Lair Award for the person who works behind the scenes, not necessarily in a leadership role.

Any member of the MLWGS community may nominate a volunteer (no more than one nomination per award please). Awards will be determined based upon nominations received.

Please submit nominations to mew.mailbox@gmail.com no later than Friday, May 22, 2015. Thank you for taking the time to vote!

MLWGS (Required) Summer Reading Books

A book, a book.  My kingdom for a [summer reading] book!

It's easy for you and King Richard to get your summer reading books.  The PTSA is taking orders for the MLWGS required summer reading selections.  The titles are available at a discounted, tax-free price - - convenient for families, a benefit to MLWGS, and best of all, those books will get into eager hands before the summer begins (certainly a bonus in getting started on the tale of the whale)!

Order forms will be distributed to rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, and the form is available on this page under "Links", to the right.

Orders are due by Tuesday, May 19.  Please leave them in Valenta Williams’s office off the Bluestone Lobby.  Make checks payable to MLWGS PTSA.  The books will be distributed to students through the English Department.  If you need financial assistance in obtaining any of the required titles, please contact Karl Zweerink at 354-6800, ext. 3210, kzweerink@gsgis.k12.va.us.  For questions or more information, please contact Susan Creasey at creaseys@verizon.net.

Ladies’ Night Out: Salad Days —
Last Chance to Buy Tickets!

Come enjoy your "Salad Days" with MLWGS moms and female faculty and staff at the annual PTSA Ladies’ Night Out. This year’s theme is a Shakespearean expression referring to a youthful time of idealism and innocence!  The evening will feature hearty salads along with bread, desserts, wine, and soft drinks at this event open to all female parents, staff, and friends of MLWGS. Last year 85 women attended this lovely evening, talking and eating with old and new friends.  This year Ladies’ Night Out will take place on Wednesday, May 20 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the home of Mary Michael and Rich Schweiker (parents of Richard and Claire) in historic Windsor Farms. Tickets cost $35. We encourage you to buy tickets for MLWGS teachers too! To purchase your ticket to this PTSA fundraiser, contact Kristin Lyons at clyons1@comcast.net or Yvette Conte at contefamily5@msn.com.

ATTENTION SENIORS

Senior Group Photo
A group photo of seniors in their caps and gowns was taken on Wednesday, April 29.  If you did not get a chance to purchase a copy, it’s not too late.  Lifetouch will link a copy of this photo to the other photos that will be taken at the graduation ceremony.  The cost will still be $15.  Contact Ms. Sheppard (804-354-6800 ext. 3304 or ksheppard@gsgis.k12.va.us) with any questions.

Community Service Hours:  Due by Monday, May 18, 3:30 p.m.
Completion of 140 community service hours is a requirement for graduation (see the MLWGS student handbook).  Students may confirm their community service hours in PowerSchool. Please see Ms. Valenta Williams in room 100 if there are any discrepancies. All seniors must turn in any remaining hours they have earned no later than May 18.

Music Performance Auditions
May 19 & 20, 3:20 – 4:30 p.m., Auditorium
Showcasing MLWGS Senior musical talent is an important tradition at Senior Recognition Night and graduation.  For example, vocalists are needed to sing The Star Spangled Banner.  Additional performers or performance groups (instrumental or vocal) are sought for both events.   Students should begin preparing now if they would like to audition.   Any MLWGS senior or group of seniors interested in auditioning must sign up for a time slot by May 15 on the list outside the Forum.  Final decisions will be made by a committee of faculty members and the class officers.   Note: All students intending to perform must be present at auditions and are required to perform their intended piece for graduation or Senior Night.

My Final CHESS Tournament
Written by Isaac Steincamp (’15, Chesterfield)

The MLWGS Chess Team shows their winnings from an eventful weekend in Columbus.
Never in my eleven years of playing chess have I seen a group more motivated to improve than the MLWGS Chess Team. This year I coached the team on Tuesdays after school in Room 111 (we still meet), and throughout the year, each player improved significantly. Furthermore, the members of this club really were passionate about working with younger players in the Greater Richmond area. On top of practices, each of the members of our club made an effort to volunteer at our free chess clinics throughout the year, or our other chess events we ran throughout the year. In my time at Maggie Walker, Chess Club has been the most impressive student run club I’ve seen, and has emerged has a major staple of the Richmond Chess Community.

FALL SHOW CLOSES AFTER SUCCESSFUL RUN

Audiences raved about the MLWGS Drama production of You Can’t Take It With You, which closed after a three-night run on Saturday, November 22. Theatergoers delighted in this zany twist on the classic ‘boy meets girl’ story, set in 1930’s New York. Proving that great comedy endures, those in attendance laughed raucously at the combination of pithy dialogue, madcap antics, and homespun wisdom that permeates the play.

Alice Sycamore (Mary-Dryden Maio) is newly engaged to the boss’s son Tony Kirby, Jr. (Sam Martin), and trying desperately to keep him from seeing just how nutty her family is. Despite her well-laid plans, Tony and his family appear at the most inopportune time to witness a typical Sycamore family evening.
  • Grandpa Martin Vanderhoff (Naomi Vickers), when not attending a college commencement, hunting snakes, practicing darts, evading income taxes, or having a midnight rendezvous with the local beat cop, doles out pearls of wisdom nestled between the silly shenanigans of Alice’s family.
  • Her mother, Penny Sycamore (Gwyneth Sholer), flits between being a playwright, painter, matchmaker and party hostess/emcee.
  • Her father Paul was played by MLWGS favorite comic actor, John Libby. When not playing with his toy boat, Paul is in constant danger of blowing up the family residence with his basement fireworks manufacturing business.
  • Paul’s partner, Mr. De Pinna (played by MLWGS drama newcomer Sam Hopper), is the ice man, adopted one day eight years prior and now as much a part of the Sycamore family as the living room furniture.
  • Penny Sycamore’s sister Essie (Coly Elhai) is an accomplished candy maker but prefers to devote most of her energy to ballet, an art for which she obviously has no talent.
  • Essie’s husband, Ed Carmichael (Evan Heiter), provides the piano accompaniment for Essie’s dancing delivery service for her candy business and serves as everyone’s gofer and errand boy. In between, he prints anything that comes to mind (Dynamite the White House! Dynamite the Capitol! God is the State, the State is God!) and tucks it into the candy boxes.
Throw in two perfectly mismatched maids, Donna and Rheba (Genna Markee and Shelbie Dunivan), Essie’s vocally anti-communist Russian ballet teacher, Mr. Kholenkov (Brannon Linder), a drunken actress Penny picked up on a bus (Hanna Polaski), and Grand Duchess turned waitress Olga Katrina (Emma Bilski) and you have the perfect foil for Tony’s parents, the stiff-necked, upper crusty Anthony and Miriam Kirby, (Jackson Downey and Elizabeth Hayes). An evening of awkward interaction leads both families to discover far more about themselves than they bargained for, and some unexpected mayhem leads to a night in jail for both clans. What we learn in the aftermath is that family, even a nutty one, means more than anything.

Under the direction of Matt Polson and stage managed by the team of Abby Dallas and Cece D’Arville, the actors gave three impeccable performances. Freshman Mary-Dryden Maio was charming and adorable as Alice. In the play’s most serious scene, Sam Martin and Jackson Downey delivered a profound performance as father and son seeing each other as they truly are for the first time. Naomi Vickers once again carried off the gender and age change convincingly and with a style all her own. Gwyneth Sholer constantly tickled the audience with perfectly delivered lines and the breezy, confident stage presence that has become her trademark. Following a script highly dependent on perfect timing and sharp delivery, the entire cast was crisp, lively and witty.

The actors returned on Sunday for the somewhat somber tasks of striking the set, putting away the props, and closing the book on You Can’t Take It With You. MLWGS students and faculty look forward to the next drama event. Following on this highly successful production, Director Matt Polson and Producer Carol Piersol, will collaborate again for the musical Into The Woods, playing March 2015 at Maggie Walker.
