NIGHT OF THE DRAGON AUCTION
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2017

The 2017 Night of the Dragon auction is coming up on Saturday, February 25!  The auction raises money for the five booster groups, the PTSA, and the Foundation.

The auction committee would like to give a big shout out to everyone who has contributed to the auction this year. This year the committee is excited by the wonderful support the Night of the Dragon has received from MLWGS alumni and alumni parents! Some of the fabulous items donated by alumni include:

  • Jeremy Grayboyes (’04) donated a beautiful watercolor and pen illustration of Fan houses. You can see more of his artwork, including cityscapes of D.C., New York, Baltimore, New Orleans, and Hong Kong, on his website.
  • Greg Butler (’00) donated a Friday-Sunday stay at his 3 bd/4 ba cottage in Charlottesville. Situated just off JPA, the cottage is just a three-minute walk from The Lawn and a ten-minute walk from the stadium.
  • Sarah Courtney Oklesson (’05) runs Grid+Love Designs and donated a framed copy of this gorgeous Richmond, VA print. Grid+Love prints are a perfect way to keep the places you love nearby no matter how far away you are.
  • Singer/songwriter Lucy Dacus (’13) has had quite a year. She landed a record deal with legendary indie label Matador and toured the US and Europe. Her debut album, NO BURDEN, has been praised by The New York Times, NPR, and SPIN, among many others. Rolling Stone ranked her song “I Don’t Wanna Be Funny Anymore” #17 on their best 50 songs of 2016 list. The Richmond Times Dispatch named her a 2016 Person of the Year. Lucy donated a signed copy of her album to the auction.
  • Jamey Stegmaier (’99)’s company, Stonemaier Games, produced the hit game Scythe after raising $1.8 million via Kickstarter. Jamey donated a signed copy of Scythe along with two of Stonemaier’s other critically acclaimed games: Viticulture and Euphoria.
  • Nathan Conway (’06) donated a gift certificate to Metzger Bar & Butchery in Church Hill, of which he is one of the owners. Metzger was named Style Weekly’s Restaurant of the Year in 2015 and has been praised in Eater and the Washington Post.

Special thanks to Alumni Steering Committee member Misty Clark (’96) who rounded up donations and gift cards from businesses around town in her spare time.

So come to the auction and see (and buy!) the creative results of MLWGS graduates - you will walk away impressed!

COURSE REGISTRATION FOR NEXT YEAR IS COMING UP!

During the week of January 23, students will receive course registration materials.  The counseling department will be conducting lunch time assemblies with juniors on Friday February 3 and freshmen and sophomores on Monday February 6. In addition, the PTSA will host an Advanced Course Offerings and Course Registration Information Program for parents on February 9 starting at 5:30.  Department chairs and counselors will discuss course options and scheduling considerations.

Over the next several weeks, teachers will inform students of department course offerings and sequencing.  They will also sign student Course Registration Forms.  Students will need to have the Course Registration Form as well as VCU Dual Enrollment Forms completed and signed in order to register for classes on February 23 during 2nd period.  If students do not have required teacher and parent signatures on these forms, students will not be permitted to register for classes on the 23.

School counselors will meet with all students individually after the 23 during February and March in order to discuss course selection and verify course requirement progress.  Student course request changes will be considered through the Spring semester but requests made after the end of the school year will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Please contact your student’s counselor if you have any questions.

GIVEN TO MS. WILLIAMS

Ms. Lisa Williams, English department chair, is the 2016 recipient of the Patricia E. Taylor Award for International Experience.  Ms. Williams will use the grant to journey to the Golden Triangle.  Such an endeavor will allow her to better grasp the human condition of one of the most populous regions in the world and to better articulate ideas about the evolving definition of Third World as newly industrialized.  As traveling to India underscores a core component of the mission of MLWGS, cultural awareness, Ms. Williams, who is especially excited to experience India’s rich heritage, shares that “to learn about others is to uncover truths about humanity.”

RICHMONDS OF THE WORLD IDEA CONTEST

The Richmonds of the World Idea Contest deadline for submissions has been extended until Monday January 18.  The top ten ideas win passes to Richmond’s museums and admission to the Valentine Richmond History Center.  First Prize is a Sunday brunch for four at The Jefferson Hotel.  The prizes are nice, but the most important reason for MLWGS students to participate in the contest is that our local community of Richmond and the global community of Richmond need your creative inspiration.  Please channel the words and ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and submit your idea(s) to enhance the quality of life in the MLWGS school community and/or the RVA community through a connection to the global community of Richmond.  The link below has all of the contest information and all of the information on the concept known as Richmonds of the World.

LYNN FOSHEE REED AND HANA REED
WIN 4TH ANNUAL PAT TAYLOR TEACHING AWARD
Islamic Iberia:  Muslim Influence on Science,
Mathematics, Geography and Art

Congratulations to Lynn Foshee Reed (Math) and Hana Reed (Social Studies), winners of the 2016 Patricia E. Taylor Teaching Award for International Experiences!  This mother-daughter duo will travel to Spain and Morocco this summer to explore the scientific, cultural, and artistic achievements and influences of Islamic rule on Western Europe.  As Lynn and Hana pointed out in their application, “Muslim mathematicians, geographers, scientists, and artisans helped preserve and extend scientific and cultural knowledge while the rest of Europe was in the Dark Ages.”  They hope to return with springboards for cross-cultural connections between the humanities and STEM fields.  In turn, their experiences will enrich both students and fellow faculty as Lynn and Hana share their findings with the MLWGS community.

The annual award, made possible by generous designated donations to the Governor’s School Foundation, provides up to $7500 for Maggie Walker faculty to design and embark on a summer trip abroad that will directly impact classroom instruction.  If you would like to help another Maggie Walker teacher bring the world to the classroom, please contact Laura Lewis in the Foundation at 354-1566 or Laura.Lewis@GovernorsSchooFoundation.org.

MLWGS FENCER TAKES GOLD

Dragon Steven Pressendo (Chesterfield, ’16) took Gold at the Virginia Division Qualifiers for the USA Fencing Junior Olympics in December. This is his third year qualifying. Fencing since he was six, Steven has been nationally competitive since he was twelve.

NATIONAL ENGLISH HONOR SOCIETY WRITING CONTEST WINNER

Sophomore Megan Lee (Chesterfield, ’18) won the National English Honor Society’s writing contest on the memoir, I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai.  The prompt called for students to consider literacy as an agent of empowerment. Megan’s anecdotal response reflected the style of a personal essay, while more formally alluding to Yousafzai’s commentary on the impact of education in today’s world. Providing a glimpse into her personal odyssey of autonomy through literacy and a love of learning, Megan shared that she “began to realize that these scribbles had the power to take my stocked-up knowledge and release it to the world, a stream of ink carrying my thoughts to those around me.”

ATTENTION SENIOR PARENTS

The January Senior Newsletter is now available on the School Counseling Website (https://sites.google.com/a/gsgis.k12.va.us/mlw-school-counseling/2011-2012-newsletters). This newsletter contains college-related reminders and a listing of scholarships with approaching deadlines. The latest newsletter was distributed to students in their English classes last week.

Scholarship information for seniors is also available on the School Counseling website (https://sites.google.com/a/gsgis.k12.va.us/mlw-school-counseling/college-admissions-information-1/scholarships-financial-aid) and in Naviance (https://connection.naviance.com/mlwgs). Contact your child’s counselor if you would like to view the Naviance scholarship database and need your registration code. Scholarships are still being added to this database on a monthly basis, most with direct links to the applications. Hard-copy applications are scanned and attached to the scholarship description as a PDF.

Please note that all deadlines posted on Naviance or in the Newsletter are subject to change as organizations are still sending us updated information for this school year. Check the organization’s website for the most current information and availability. Please contact Rachel Loving in the School Counseling Office with scholarship questions.

PSAT SCORES NOW AVAILABLE

At the end of last week, College Board sent emails to students that contained information on how to view their PSAT scores online. College Board released these emails in waves, with preference give to Juniors. By now, we hope that all students have received this email but a few students may still be waiting. The emails were sent to the email addresses students indicated on their registration forms when they took the test back in October. The email provides an access code as well as directions on how to create a College Board account.

Students must create an account in order to access their scores. The MLWGS Counseling Department will not be able to access online score reports for students or parents. Students/parents should contact College Board directly for assistance accessing scores if needed. Paper score reports will be mailed to Maggie Walker by the end of January, and we will distribute these to students after exams and provide students with guidance on how to interpret the score reports and utilize free resources such as Khan Academy which will help them prepare for the SAT. We will post resources on the School Counseling website as they are made available.

College Board released this You Tube video which may be helpful to watch while reviewing the score report: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzCSIilL3WQ&feature=youtu.be.

Sincerely,

The MLWGS Counseling Department

MLWGS DRAMA CLUB PRESENTS THE CRUCIBLE BY ARTHUR MILLER
and MLWGS STUDENT TICKETS ARE FREE!

The MLWGS Drama Club will be performing The Crucible this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. each night (November 19, 20 and 21).  Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2406230.  Tickets are $8 for non-MLWGS students and $10 for adults.

This wonderful opportunity for MLWGS students to see the show for free is made possible due to the incredible generosity of an anonymous drama supporter.  MLWGS and the Drama Club are so grateful for this gift that opens up the show to the entire student body.

The Crucible is produced by Carol Piersol and directed by Matt Polson. Matt also directed last year's shows, Into the Woods and You Can't Take it With You, and MLWGS is so fortunate to have his leadership once again. Please join us as MLWGS Drama looks forward to entertaining you!

Questions? Please contact maggiewalkerdrama@gmail.com.

BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR THANKSGIVING TURKEY ...
don’t forget to register your Kroger and Martin’s cards.

For Kroger Community Rewards, register at krogercommunityrewards.com and click on Sign In/Renew and follow the instructions.  The school number is 82125 (or you can look it up under Maggie Walker). Even if you did this last year, it has to be done again. If you are one of the 138 parents who have signed up this year, we thank you.

You can also take the Kroger bar code to your local store and have customer service scan it to participate in the Plus Card for Education, which gets the school free supplies. This is NOT the same as the Community Rewards program, but you can do both.

For Martin’s A+ School rewards log on to www.martinsfood.com/aplus and designate our school ID 23112.  Despite the instructions in last week’s Smoke & Scales, you actually DO have to sign up again this year since the MLWGS school number has changed.
This year is also the last one for Target’s Take Charge of Education, so let’s get the most we can out of it.  Go to www.target.com/tcoe and enter your Redcard number.  The school number is 104517.

Although it’s a pain to register annually, these programs brought in more than $8,000 last year.  The Kroger program is particularly generous.  It’s all money that goes to the school and MLWGS students, so please take the time to register.

STUDENT COUNSELING DEPARTMENT OFFERING SESSIONS

The School Counseling Department is offering weekly support groups for students who may be feeling overwhelmed this time of year. The sessions will be led by Cindy Barnes, a veteran school counselor and licensed professional counselor.  Ninth through eleventh-graders will meet to explore the ways they respond to academic demands and the stresses of everyday life.  Using Affect Theory students will find some ways to reduce their response to stress and increase their sense of accomplishment.

For Maggie Walker seniors, the college admissions season typically brings with it increased student stress.  To this end, the School Counseling Department will be offering a dedicated counseling group for interested seniors on stress management.

If students are interested in attending either of these groups, please have them let their school counselor know so that the School Counseling Department can organize the sessions.  We hope to start these sessions this week so please let us know this week if possible.

THE GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL RICHMOND ALUMNI PRESENT
SECOND ANNUAL PAT TAYLOR TEACHING AWARD LECTURE

Celie Boswell:  "Rainbows have no Fences"
Thursday, November 19, at 5:30 p.m. in the Forum

Have you ever tried boerewors, a traditional South African sausage spiced with coriander?  How about biltong, a dried meat similar to jerky?  Come discover the flavors of South African fare on Thursday, November 19, when English teacher Celie Boswell presents Rainbows have no Fences, chronicling her travels this past summer to South Africa and Swaziland. These South African favorites will be served along with other dishes that will seem both exotic and familiar to your palate. Along with food and stunning photos, Celie will share tales of traveling with her family in modern day South Africa and Swaziland. The reception begins at 5:30 in the Forum, followed by Celie’s presentation at 6:00.

The Governor’s School Foundation sponsors the Patricia E. Taylor Teaching Award for International Experiences, which provides a cash grant of up to $7,500 to a MLWGS teacher for a summer international travel experience that will have a direct impact upon his or her classroom instruction. SPEAK UP AT THE BUDGET TOWN HALL
December 2, 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Did you know that for FY16 participating school divisions will pay almost $700 less annually per pupil for the education of MLWGS students than they paid in FY09? Over that same time period, healthcare costs alone for MLWGS employees have more than doubled. What is not being funded by the school now that should be included in the budget? Have you ever looked at the old copyright dates on some of MLWGS’s students' textbooks? Heard complaints about technology issues? Did you write a big check for dual enrollment fees, workbooks, or a trip required for an instructional class? How about the suggested participation donation of $150 per sport? Would you like to see these issues or others addressed in the budget?

The annual budget process for MLWGS is starting. Last year, parents and students spoke up about the need for a new activity bus and textbooks. Guess what? The activity bus was replaced as well as textbooks for a few of the classes that need them. The Regional School Board will listen, it just needs your input. Come to the Budget Town Hall on Wed., December 2, 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the MLWGS Auditorium. Speakers need to signup in advance by contacting Barbara Marshall at bmarshall@gsgis.k12.va.us no later than 10:00 a.m. on December 2. Questions? Contact Anne Hayes, MLWGS PTSA Advocacy Chair at annehayes@verizon.net.
