Come one, come all…an event for all ages! Fall Festival returns this Friday! This signature MLWGS event showcases the school’s strengths:
- creative and talented students;
- helpful and cooperative administrators and teachers;
- generous and enthusiastic parents; and
- a school spirit that is both genuine and immense.
All proceeds from the festival go directly to participating student organizations, which use these funds to support their activities throughout the year. The MLWGS PTSA is grateful to its 2014 corporate sponsors:

- State Farm recruiter Jessie Bell.
Additionally, the MLWGS PTSA sells soda and water at the festival to offset costs. The 2014 festival is bigger than ever, with more than 60 student groups offering tasty treats and clever activities. Additional facts to know:
**All pre-ordered tickets will be available for pickup at the Will Call table, located behind the festival stage toward Lombardy Street. Tickets will also be sold at the festival . . . just in case more are needed!
**There are still a few openings for volunteer assistance, both for labor and loaned items. Please check the volunteer Sign Up Genius:

**Items that are being lent for Fall Festival use should be brought to the Bluestone Lobby and marked with lender’s name (look for tape and marker). Most items can be collected at 8:15pm on the north side of the building (side closest to the student parking lot and I-95), in the lee of the main staircase. [I’ve checked with Paula about what the “lee” is] Any items remaining after clean-up can be collected from the Bluestone Lobby the week of October 20. Items not collected by October 20 will be considered gifted!
**Parking is tight. Please use the James River Bus Lines lots along Allen Avenue.
Special Opportunity to Visit with Alums at Fall Festival
At this year’s festival, several players from that championship team will be on hand to share memories. Be sure to ask about the annual Maggie Walker Armstrong Classic Football Game -- where crowds of 25,000 in attendance were common – or the team’s tradition of changing uniforms at half time. Remember, NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Willie Lanier is a Maggie Walker grad!

SCRIP at Fall Festival
The SCRIP program is an easy-to-use fundraiser sponsored by the MLWGS PTSA. Parents, alumni, and students can purchase gift cards to their favorite stores and restaurants with MLWGS receiving a percentage of the sales. A MLWGS SCRIP card is worth its full face value, and costs nothing extra. Unable to visit the MLWGS PSTA SCRIP table at Fall Festival? The next regular order date is Thursday, October 16. Cards will be available for pick-up the following Thursday, October 23.
Order forms can be downloaded here under "Links", or picked up in Room 100. Orders are due on Thursdays in the SCRIP box located in Office 100, and are delivered the following Thursday at lunchtime in Office 100. Specific order and delivery dates can be found on the school calendar.

Katie Anderson, a former Dragon, lost her battle with Leukemia and passed away last March. Her mother, Carolyn McKann, will be running a marathon in her daughter’s memory on November 9 in Athens, Greece. Her goal is to raise $10,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. MLWGS Chess Team
After a long summer, the MLWGS Chess team has hit the ground running. This month, six players have reached their personal best. The team will hold its first FREE chess clinic of the year on Monday, October 6 from 5-7pm. It’s open to people from all skill levels, from rated tournament-goers to people who have never played the game before. Team members will teach and play games with anyone who shows up.Senior Trip Cancelled
Due to a lack of interest, the senior trip has been cancelled. Voided checks were returned last week. Senior officers will consider planning another option for second semester. Contact Ms. Sheppard (354-6800 ext. 3304) with any questions.
