HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

School will be closed from Wednesday, November 21 through Friday, November 23 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

GO FUND ME FOR INJURED MLWGS STUDENT

Davison Chapman, freshman at Maggie Walker, and his mom were in a life-altering pedestrian accident on November 3 as both were hit by a car in a crosswalk. Davison is an exceptional human being- kind, loving, and extremely smart. The family has been through far too many medical emergencies for any one family to endure in his lifetime. His story is best expressed through the Go Fund Me page a family member created for Davison. I know the Maggie Walker community wants to come together and support Davison and his family. Many are aware and have already shared loving support. The best way to support the family at this time is through Davison’s Go Fund Me page, as the family is overwhelmed with around the clock care. On this site you can leave a message for Davison and his family, see updates on his progress, see the Channel 6 news story about his accident, as well as make a contribution to his medical care no matter how small. Meals are not needed at this time but may be in the future, for now, please go to https://www.gofundme.com/davison039s-beautiful-heart-amp-mind.

FY20 BUDGET TOWN HALL

Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School will host a budget town hall on December 4 at 6 p.m. in the Forum to solicit community priorities as we develop the fiscal year 2019-20 budget that will be presented to the Regional School Board and the public in March. A short presentation at this town hall will be followed by opportunities for stakeholders to comment and ask questions of the administration.

MLWGS values your input and has provided another option for those unable to attend the Budget Town Hall. The community may also submit their priorities or concerns here: https://goo.gl/forms/M0JJKKR4ppZUM9i62

MLWGS will develop a proposal that attempts to include constituent priorities. Comments will be shared with the Regional School Board, Superintendent’s Steering Committee, and the school Administration as they work to create a budget that reflects the cost of operation, programming, and staffing.

A NOTE OF THANKS

Team Weens was a special team for Kathleen Hefty, daughter of Ms. Hefty in the Language Department. Here was her response to our involvement in the event:

WOW! You guys! I've been grappling with the diagnosis of my brain tumor since I was 20 years old. I have had seizures and surgery, I've done chemo and had radiation and it's been hard and heartbreaking and overwhelming. But throughout all this pain, I've been continually touched and moved by the support of the beautiful people around me who support me endlessly. There is nothing as heartwarming as the kindness and generosity of these people, who keep me going and going strong. And now I add YOU ALL to the list of people who give me hope and courage that I'm not alone in fighting this. When my mom sent me a picture of you all in your Team Weens shirts, I cried because I felt so special and empowered. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. It means the world to me.

XO Kathleen

As of November 15, 2018, the Foundation has raised $88,339 toward our $350,000 goal. We have been able to do a lot already this year!  Just recently, we subsidized travel for Model UN and Model Congress, paid registration fees for students competing in the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling, and purchased a classroom set of clip-on reading lights to help art students drawing in low light.  It is a privilege to be able to help students do even more with their time at MLWGS. You can support all of our enhancement programming by giving to the 2018-19 Annual Fund. Thank you to everyone who has given already! We couldn't do it without you.

RUSSIA TRIP

Onion domes! Caviar! Bears! All of this and much more will be there for your enjoyment on the 2019 MLWGS summer trip to Russia. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for our students to explore the natural and man-made riches of the world's most fascinating country. Visit St. Petersburg, Moscow, and the historic cities and towns of the Golden Ring, and experience the delights of Russian hospitality during our one-week home-stay in the Southern city of Rostov-on-the-Don. Meet, travel, and live with Russian high-school students who have been studying English for 8-10 years. Because all tours will be translated and our Russian hosts speak English, you do NOT need to know any Russian to get a tremendous amount out of this three-week trip! Be sure to attend the informational meeting (where free Russian candy will be there for the taking!) on Wednesday, November 14, at lunch in the Forum, or contact Mr. White mwhite@gsgis.k12.va.us for more information.

Suicide Prevention Program

Our school is committed to supporting the social/emotional well-being of our students. That is done in a variety of ways and has included implementing the Signs of Suicide (SOS) Prevention Program through the 9th grade Health/PE classes. This program is designed to teach our freshmen that suicide can be prevented through treating mental health disorders such as depression. It encourages students to support one another but to also reach out to trusted adults if they have concerns about themselves or friends that may be at risk to self-harm.

Another component of the SOS Program that we added last year is the parent portal. This site has information on the SOS Program and mental health topics that can be of use to all parents. It provides information about national resources that are available. Parents can complete an anonymous depression screening on their child to help determine if there is a need to connect with a mental health professional. We are choosing to make this available to all MLWGS parents and not just our 9th grade parents. Questions? Call Lisa Ebeling, School Psychologist at 354-6800, ext. 3260 or your child’s school counselor. The link and sign on information for the parent portal is as follows:

THANKS FOR RESTOCKING THE GRATITUDE BOX!

Abundant gratitude from Ms. DeGroat to all parents and teachers who contributed spare cards to restock the library’s gratitude box! It is now filled again with a fresh selection of colorful, appealing blank, thank you, friendship, birthday, get well, sympathy, and thinking of you cards! There are more cards in the drawer near the creativity and calm cabinet, as well as paper, stickers, and fancy scissors for students who prefer to design their own cards. Thank you for supporting a culture of kindness, compassion, and gratitude at MLWGS.

WALKATHON FOR BRAIN TUMOR RESEARCH

Once again, I find myself shouting out the virtues of our students.  The picture that you see is just a few of the students who participated in the first and very worthwhile event on Saturday, November 3.

This was a Walkathon for Brain tumor research.  Our students walked/ran and worked this event.  They also contributed to the donation which was earmarked for research into the oligodendroglioma tumor, a slow growing tumor that my daughter has been battling for 11 years.  We have a student body that steps up and delivers all the time.  I am so proud of them and all the support at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BOYS AND GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY!

2018 MLWGS BOYS Cross Country 2A first place champs

2018 MLWGS Girls Cross Country 2A second place champs

On Friday November 9, on a rain flooded, mud covered field at The Great Meadow Event Park in Warrenton the Maggie Walker Boys' Cross Country team made history. Lead by senior Adam Sachs's (Henrico, 2019) 2nd place individual finish and bolstered by 3 additional top 15, All-State finishes from juniors Ben Neuwirth (5th-Henrico, 2020), Carter Morgan (7th – Henrico, 2020) and Nathaniel Gregory (14th -Hanover, 2019) the boys were dominant en route to their 6th consecutive VHSL 2A State Championship. This victory breaks the long standing mark of 5 consecutive team titles that the boys equaled last year. As the school moves from group 2A to group 3A next year, they will leave their 2A competition having won every Cross Country State Championship contest during their time.

On the girls' side, Mary Caroline Heinen (Richmond, 2020) left little doubt in her defense of her 2A individual title, winning by nearly 90 seconds. Sophomore Mimi Kemp (Richmond, 2021) added a 2nd top 10 finish (6th) but it wasn't enough to hold off an incredibly strong team from Clarke County. The girls did not go down without a fight though as the teams 3rd, 4th, and 5th finishers (Kathleen Russo- Chesterfield, 2021), Madelyn Campbell – Chesterfield, 2022), and Josie Greer – Richmond, 2020), all ran the fastest 5k times of their lives. The team was a very secure 2nd place, and will add a 6th and final piece of XC hardware to the 5 State Titles already resting in the trophy cases in Richmond.

REGIONAL SCHOOL BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENTS LUNCHEON

Beginning Friday, November 3 and continuing through Friday, November 9, the Dragons of Maggie Walker Governor’s School dined with their division superintendent and/or division school board member(s) during their lunch block in the school conference room/boardroom.

Students were asked to share ideas or any concerns they encounter on an everyday basis on this campus. The students, representing twelve divisions, enjoyed a box lunch prepared by local vendors.

The Dragons responded impressively and discussed a wide variety of topics that included their insights on the MW admission process and what the divisions could do differently to better prepare students for Maggie Walker. Mrs. Ogburn, Henrico School Board, remarked that her group shared perceptions from their middle school years telling her they felt isolated in a specific group, whereas here at MW, there is no group distinction and all student peers are equal learners. She added, the students stated they felt they fit in more at MW.

The luncheons allowed the superintendents and school board members to hear directly from their students. It was also a great opportunity for students to listen to the opinions of other classmates.

The MLWGS Regional School Board is very grateful to the students who generously participated in this series of luncheons.

THERAPY DOGS VISITING OCTOBER 26TH!

Last spring, therapy dog teams from Caring Canines visited our school. The dogs were very popular and a request was made by students to have the dogs come to Maggie Walker for an additional visit. We have been able to accommodate this with the support of school staff and the help of Caring Canines. The dogs and their handlers will be visiting our school on October 26 and later in the spring. We’re excited about offering our students an additional opportunity to enjoy the animals.

Students must have a parent permission form to present to staff prior to entering the area where the dogs will be available (field weather permitting or the gym). A link for the form is attached to the document or students may pick up a copy in the counseling department. Questions? Contact Lisa Ebeling, School Psychologist, at lebeling@gsgis.k12.va.us or call at 354-6800, x 3260.

WELLNESS INITIATIVES AT MLWGS

Mental/Emotional Health Initiatives at Maggie Walker

Our school is invested in supporting our students' emotional and social well-being. Interested in knowing about the programs that we have directed to that effort? Read all about it!

School staff at Maggie Walker have long recognized that our students have needs beyond the academic. In order for students to be well rounded and ready for life after high school, their social-emotional health must be supported as well. Maggie Walker has four counselors invested in supporting our students. Part-time school psychology services were added to the counseling department during the 2016/7 school year in order to make further assistance available to students.

Ever wonder what other mental wellness initiatives are at available at Maggie Walker? Here is an overview of the supports that are available this school year beyond individual counseling support:

· Fall 2018 – Implementation of the SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program through the 9th grade Health/PE classes. This program is designed to help our students recognize the characteristics of depression, how to support their peers, and to understand when to get adult support. This program includes a mental health wellness screening for students. A portal associated with the program has information and resources for our parents and will be available to all MLWGS parents. This class is offered during a lunch session for those students who took 9th grade PE online.

· October 2018 – Minding Your Mind presentation/CKG Foundation. Our freshman and seniors will hear a presentation by a certified, young adult speaker who has had experience with depression and/or anxiety. This is designed to educate students on common mental health conditions and works to destigmatize seeking treatment for these challenges.

· Fall 2019 /10th Graders – Personality and Career Inventory “Do What You Are.” This is designed to help our students learn about their personality, strengths, blind spots and more. It allows them to explore suitable careers and majors. This program is implemented by Joy Davis, school counselor and Lisa Ebeling, school psychologist.

· Winter 2019 – The SOS Second ACT Program will be implemented with the junior class. This extension of the SOS High School Program works to build the resiliency of our students. The program reviews the signs and symptoms of depression and suicide, while also prompting students to discuss substance use and other risky behaviors. Supporting material provides students with information on healthcare basics, as well as tips on seeking treatment, self-advocacy, and more. This is intended to help students with life skills needed after they leave high school.

· BC2M Club – This is a student-led club initiative that encourages teens to explore mental health topics in a safe and supportive environment. It provides a platform for our students to work with their peers to create a more educated and empathetic school community. Club sponsors are Tinsley Pollard, AP Psychology teacher and Lisa Ebeling, school psychologist.

· Stress Less, Laugh More Week – This is scheduled to take place in the spring before AP exams. The week is dedicated to decreasing stress and promoting fun. Last year’s activities included treats at lunch, a game day, and a visit from therapy dogs. A student committee works with Lisa Ebeling, school psychologist, and Paige Hawkins, Student Activities Director, to select the activities for the week.

· Peer Mentor Program – this program is designed to provide some of our freshman and sophomore students with personalized support from upper- classmen to help with the transition to Maggie Walker. This program is coordinated by Kierstin Streitel, school counselor and Lisa Ebeling, school psychologist.

· Small group support/Winter 2019– Our school psychologist partners with a therapist from the VCU Anxiety Clinic to provide targeted support to students. This includes topics on time management, stress reducing strategies, and building executive functioning skills.
