Almost, Maine

by John Cariani

Directed by Leigh Glatt

November 7, 8, and 9 at 7:00 pm

Welcome to Almost, Maine, a place that's so far north, it's almost not in the United States. It's almost in Canada. And it's not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting organized- so it almost doesn't exist. One cold, clear, winter night, as the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the residents of Almost, Maine, find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal and the hearts mend- almost- in this delightful midwinter night's dream. The show runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 7-9, at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets are $7 for students and $12 for adults and may be purchased at the door or online at https://mlwgs-am.brownpapertickets.com/.

OPENING NIGHT SPECIAL: Everyone can enjoy student pricing on opening night, Thursday, November 7.

Questions? Please contact maggiewalkerdrama@gmail.com.

Junior Perisa Ashar wins Virginia Delegate Position and represents Virginia at The Global Youth Institute of World Food Prize.

Perisa Ashar won the Virginia delegate position to represent the State at Global Youth Institute of World Food Prize, in Des Moines, Iowa. She presented her research on “South Sudan Food Insecurity: Problems and Solutions” in a round table conference to 200 other students from 12 countries, and global leaders such as the 2016 World Food Prize Laureate, Dr. Howarth Bouis, who pioneered the concept of biofortification of crops to prevent micronutrient malnutrition. Perisa researched the political mileu, climate, and causes of food shortage in South Sudan and possible geo-political and scientific solutions at regional and global level. Each year, the World Food Prize Youth Institute convenes around the World Food Day, October 16, and chosen student delegates present their findings with international experts and their peers, connect with other students from around the world, tour cutting-edge industrial and research facilities, and take part in symposium discussions with global leaders in science, industry, and policy in order to explore and solve local, national, and global hunger and food security issues.

Perisa also interacted and attended the Borlaugue Symposium led by World Food Prize Laureates, former U.S. Ambassadors of several countries (Thailand, Senegal, Uganda, Colombia), and world leaders such as the former president of Nigeria, the President of Democratic Republic of Congo, and humanitarian leaders from over 65 countries. In addition, Perisa also attended the ceremony in which the 2019 World Food Prize Laureate, Mr. Simon Groot was awarded the Food Laureate Prize by Mr. Kenneth Quinn (President of World Food Prize and Former Ambassador to Cambodia).

It was conceived by 1970 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Norman Borlaugh, and strives for the supply of nutritious food to all people and to fight global hunger and starvation with the theme of Pax Agricultura or Peace Through Agriculture.

VISUAL ART BOOSTERS EVENT

This Friday, November 1, the Fine Arts Department and Visual Arts Boosters is hosting our annual Fall Art Walk event in conjunction with Richmond’s First Fridays. Every first Friday of the month, local art galleries open their doors for the evening.

To begin the evening, our wonderful Visual Arts Boosters are hosting a reception from 6-7 p.m. in room 153 outside of the Bluestone Lobby. Please join us for snacks and fellowship prior to heading out to the galleries. If you are willing to help out with food for the reception, please sign up HERE

We will give everyone maps of the galleries and Coach Hall will take anyone who would like to join him around to some specific exhibitions.

To help avoid parking around the galleries, we will have a school bus which will run a circuit from the Main St. galleries to Broad St. and then back to school. The bus will continue this circuit throughout the evening until the last pickup at 9:30 p.m. This way, you may stay for as long (or as short) as you like. Details will be discussed that evening.

If you’ve never had the opportunity to participate in a First Fridays Art Walk - or even if you have - we’d love to see you at our event! All are welcome (students, parents, family members, and faculty)!

Additional details can be found here: http://www.maggiewalkervab.org

Thanks again and we hope to see you and your young artists at this event. Please let me know if you have any questions.

A MESSAGE FROM THE FAMILY OF BEAR O’BRYAN

Dear MLWGS Students, Parents, Colleagues, Alumni and Friends:

Saturday night left me in awe. The depth of your feeling showed very clearly. Each detail, picture, and story evoked a smile or a tear. I can now add your memories to my own. The time and emotion invested by you to organize such an incredible display is an honor few receive.

Bear spoke of each of you often and felt pride in each accomplishment you experienced. Many times we discussed your amazing abilities and intellect. He knew he was privileged to be a part of your life. And Saturday night, you once again proved what exceptional individuals you are.

Because of you, he looked forward to every work day. Because of you, he kept his youth. Because of you, he had a purpose. In many ways, you introduced me to my brother. You gave Bear the greatest gift any person can receive – your trust.

Thank you for allowing us to share this night with his other family.

The Family of Bear O’Bryan

NIGHT OF THE DRAGON

The thirteenth annual “Night of the Dragon,” an exciting evening of live and silent auctions, delicious food and spirits, beautiful music, and enjoyable conversation, will be held on February 21, 2015 at the Hilton Hotel and Spa in Short Pump.

This event directly benefits the students of the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School by providing major funding for the PTSA, Academic Boosters, Athletic Boosters, Drama Boosters, Music Boosters, Visual Arts Boosters, and The Governor's School Foundation.

The auction offers a large variety of items and donations are actively being solicited now. Some of the best-selling items include weekend getaways at vacation homes, themed dinners, and unique tours of area attractions - especially those not normally accessible to the public.
Have a unique skill? Willing to offer lessons or a demo? Both are welcome. Can't think of anything to donate? Redeem credit card points for gift cards and donate the gift cards to the auction.

Donation forms are available on the event website, www.nightofthedragon.com. Just print out a form and return it to the auction box in Valenta Williams' office off the Bluestone Lobby. The deadline for donations to be included in this year's event is December 12, 2014.

TWO STUDENTS HAVE WORK ACCEPTED

TO LIBRARY OF VIRGINIA

As the culmination of their historiography lessons in Mr. Wilkes’ advanced seminar, students complete an oral history project that requires they research, interview, record, and produce an oral history project on a living participant in an event of historical significance. Two of last year’s students recently learned their work had been accepted into the collections of the Library of Virginia.

Megan Keck chose to examine the integration of Charles City County Schools thorough the efforts of county resident, Richard Bowman. Mr. Bowman successfully filed suit in 1963 (Bowman v. School Board of Charles City), to rectify the inequities present in the county’s unique and segregated composition of white, African-American and Native American students.

Reed Canaan researched the journey of Martha Grattan, a MLWGS parent, who entered Washington and Lee University in 1985 as a member of the school’s first female class – a path that proved both controversial and challenging. Reed’s investigation involved close examination of school records opened to her by the library and archives at Washington and Lee. Her work was added to the Washington and Lee library in addition to the Library of Virginia.

FREEDOM OF CHOICE AT THE DRAGON'S LAIR

At The Dragon's Lair, you can cast your vote for your preferred writing instrument, available for just $2! One is available in metallic green with the MLWGS logo, the other comes in glossy black. However, they both write with the same easy-flowing black ink, so they're pretty much the same, which is by no means a thinly veiled allegory for our two major political parties.

Moving on! Come be a good community citizen and check out our wares every Tuesday and Friday during lunch, during Parent/Teacher conferences, or 24/7 at http://mlwgsdragons.weebly.com/. Cash and credit cards welcome. And remember: shop early, shop often.
