SCRIP ORDERS

The last United Scrip order before summer break will be due on Friday, May 17. Please consider supporting your PTSA through this simple fundraiser!

Graduations, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, end of the year teacher gifts, and summer travel are all reasons to think ahead and use Scrip gift cards to benefit MLWGS PTSA at no extra cost to you! It’s simple- purchase gift cards for the retailers you shop through United Scrip, and a percentage goes back to our school.
For a full list of participating retailers go to:

You will be amazed at how many of the retailers you shop could be benefitting MLWGS. Questions about the program? Please don’t hesitate to contact Laura Dysart, MLWGS Scrip coordinator, and parent at lauradysart@verizon.net.

Submit your order form and payment by May 17 to room 100 in the Scrip box. The order form lists our most popular retailers, but you can write in any of the participating retailers at the bottom of the form.

SPANISH AND FRENCH STUDENTS NEED HOST FAMILIES IN JULY

Make a family memory and open your heart and home this summer! Host a student from Spain or France (ages 13-17) in your home for 3-4 weeks. Learn about their culture while he or she learns about living in an American family just being a part of what you regularly do. We have a variety of programs to suit your family’s work or non-working schedule. Families receive stipends to help out with expenses. We can help work out transportation or vacation concerns. This will be a rich experience for your family!

The Foundation Parent May Campaign is well underway! By now you have hopefully heard from parent representatives from your child's class about the ways that you can support the Governor's School Foundation Annual Fund!

We still need to raise more than $110,000 before June 30 in order to provide the same level of enhancements next year! These funds are essential in providing teacher professional development and continuing education, academic enhancements, upgraded technology, and assistance for students in financial need. The Foundation's efforts impact all of our students!

To date, the competition is neck and neck with the Freshmen parents slightly ahead. Help your child's class land on top! Current parent participation is as follows:

Senior parents (2019) 32%
Junior Parents (2020) 31%
Sophomore parents (2021) 31%
Freshman Parents (2022) 33%

We look forward to all that we can accomplish together for MLWGS!

COLLEGE BOOT CAMP

Dear Rising 12th-Grade Students and Parents,

Registration for College Boot Camp is now open! College Boot Camp is an optional, fee-based summer program which is designed to provide students a space and time to complete their Common Application (or other application of their choice) before the school year starts. The dates are August 15-17 and there is an option of a morning or afternoon session. Please click the link below to register on “Sign Up Genius” and receive payment instructions and additional logistical information. The fee is $55. Fee waiver information, if needed, is provided within the link below. Registration operates on a “first come, first served” basis, so if you are interested in attending please register ASAP. Registration is open until May 31. If the program appears full when you go to register, please your name to the waitlist. We are continuing to look at different spaces in the school building to accommodate the demand.

More information about College Boot Camp: The MLWGS Senior Counselors will provide a structured curriculum over three, three-hour sessions with specific tips and personal assistance at every step. College Boot Camp is designed to walk students through each section of the Common Application and provide them with the resources to complete each section during the program. A guest speaker will address the essay specifically, and the students should leave the Boot Camp with their Common App primary essay (or other essay of their choice) in a completed draft form. There will be some group discussion, peer editing, quiet individual work time, and one-on-one consultations. The Boot Camp will also touch on college-specific supplements and popular non-Common App applications. Topics can be adjusted based on the needs of the group.

Please contact Rachel Loving at rloving@gsgis.k12.va.us with questions about registration or program content.
