COURSE REGISTRATION 

Course Registration takes place this Thursday, March 7 during 2nd period. During February, students met with their counselor to discuss the course selection for next year and received copies of the Course Registration Form as well as VCU forms if they plan to take Dual Enrollment courses next year. Teacher signatures are required for plus, Dual Enrollment, Pre-AP, and Advanced Placement courses on the Couse Registration Form. A parental signature is required for the Course Registration Form and the VCU packet for Dual Enrollment courses (please make sure to sign the registration form, in-state tuition form, and honor form). Extra copies of the forms are available in the counseling office. Please contact your child’s counselor if you have questions about course selection for next year.

The February edition of the Senior Newsletter is available on the School Counseling website! This edition contains many scholarships with upcoming deadlines!

A description of all scholarship opportunities sent to MLWGS can be found on Naviance. Please note that this list is not exhaustive- students are still encouraged to do their own scholarship research.  All deadlines listed in Naviance are subject to change; therefore, it is important that students confirm all deadlines and scholarship criteria on the scholarship organization’s direct website. Please contact Kierstin Streitel in the School Counseling Office with any scholarship questions.

ORCHESTRA NEWS

Congratulations to William Davis (Chesterfield '21), Bass and Minji Cho (Chesterfield '21), Violin for making it into All State Orchestra this weekend. Joshua Yoo (Chesterfield '22), Violin placed as a second alternate which is pretty remarkable as a freshman. Minji and William will participate in 2019 All Virginia Band, Chorus, and Orchestra Event April 4-6 at the Dominion Energy Center for the Performing Arts.

RSVP TODAY for Grandparents and Special Friends Day this Friday

Grandparents and Special Friends Day is this Friday, April 20. Please RSVP by close of business TODAY, Wednesday April 18 by either emailing the Foundation Office at events@MLWGSFoundation.org or calling (804) 354-1566.  Grandparents and Special Friends Day is an afternoon event where current students' grandparents (or other special family members and friends) can visit MLWGS and learn a little about our school, take a brief tour, and have a reception with their grandchildren.

Students! The Yearbook staff would LOVE to see pictures of you on Spring Break for use in the Spring Supplement. Whether you traveled, worked, volunteered, or did anything else remotely interesting, we would be grateful for your images of yourself doing anything interesting or in any interesting place. On Friday, March 30, 45 Governor's School graduates spoke to current students about life after high school at the 4th biennial Alumni Showcase. Our speakers included a professional distance runner, a paleoanthropologist, a pastry chef, an investment banker, many entrepreneurs, attorneys, and alumni working in the medical field, and many more. Though most of the Foundation's work focuses on serving current MLWGS students and faculty, we also value our work as the school's alumni office, which gives us the opportunity to organize events like this. Many of the alumni who returned to speak expressed that they would be happy to be in touch with any students interested in corresponding about their education and/or chosen career field. Events like Alumni Showcase are entirely funded by the Foundation's Annual Fund.  So far this year, the Foundation's 2017-18 Annual Fund Campaign has raised $267,348 which is 81% of our $330,000 goal. 32% of current parents have donated a total of $60,767. In our strongest fundraising years, parent participation has reached 70%. Here is the parent participation by class as of April 10:

FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT SPRING BREAK TRIP!

Maggie Walker Fine Arts Department had a successful trip to New York City during Spring Break 2018!

The Fine Arts Department at Maggie Walker had an amazing art-venture in New York City over Spring Break. This trip, which takes place once every four years, introduces our students to the world-class cultural institutions unique to New York City. Despite the cold weather, students toured the Met, Guggenheim, and MOMA and enjoyed some authentic New York cuisine! Thanks to the Governor’s School Foundation and the Visual Arts Boosters for their financial support of this unique student experience. -Jeff Hall

COURSE REGISTRATION THIS THURSDAY!

All returning students will be registering for next year’s classes on Thursday March 8 during 2^nd period. Students must have their course registration forms completed and signed by teachers and parents in order to register. If students are registering for a VCU class, VCU registration forms are also required.

Makeup registration is scheduled for Tuesday, March 13 during lunch in the 3^rd floor computer lab in room 318. Scheduling forms are available should students need additional copies.

Students are also asked to submit the Home Technology Access form during course registration as well. Extra copies of this form will be available in the course registration rooms.

MARCH IS YOUTH ART AND MUSIC MONTH

The design was created in the Topic in Digital Art: Graphic Design class by Henry Cutright (Henrico '20). 

This year, in addition to our regular month-long student art exhibition in the second floor hallway, various school music groups will also be performing throughout the evening of our opening event. Student short films will also be shown in the auditorium.   The date for this event is Wednesday, March 14 from 5-7 p.m.  The event is open to the public and refreshments will be provided. Please mark your calendar!





CONGRATULATIONS! 

Minji Cho (Chesterfield '21), violin, and Andrew Shin (Henrico '18), viola, qualify for All State Orchestra based on their audition performance February 24, 2018 at James Madison University.

In addition to enhancement grants that form the bulk of the Foundation's programming, the Annual Fund Campaign also supports Foundation events like Alumni Showcase, which this year is set for Friday, March 30, 2018.  Alumni Showcase is a biennial event during which Governor's School graduates return to their alma mater to talk to current students about the many paths life can take after high school.  We have a great list of speakers signed up for this year, including a solar energy company CEO, an Olympic Trials-qualified marathoner, a radiologist, a novelist, a pastry chef, and so many more.

So far this year, the Foundation's 2017-18 Annual Fund Campaign has raised $250,807 which is 76% of our $330,000 goal. 27% of current parents have donated a total of $53,832. In our strongest fundraising years, parent participation has reached 70%.  Help us get there this year!  Here is the parent participation by class as of February 28:
