Return to School: Social Distancing

For students returning on Monday, March 15, the attached map provides an overview of our new one-way traffic pattern. This system was created in consultation with the MLWGS engineering club to promote social distancing while transitioning between classes. Arrows are being placed on the floor, and signage will mark each stairwell. Please review before arriving on campus. This will take some getting used to, but if we work together, we can promote health and safety at the school.

Attention Parents of Returning 2021-22 Students

Students registered for next year’s classes on March 4-5. Parents have the opportunity to check student course requests through the “Class Registration” icon in Powerschool this week to make sure they approve student selections. If parents wish to make a change or override a grade prerequisite for a class, please email your student’s counselor by the end of this week.

Prepare for AP Exams

Students who are planning to take AP exams in May should log into their College Board account (myap.collegeboard.org) and double-check they have “joined” all of their courses. The deadline for MLWGS to order an AP exam for you is Friday, March 12, and, even if you paid for an AP exam, if you have not joined the course, an exam cannot be ordered for you. We are doing all we can to make sure that all enrolled students are joined in the appropriate courses in the College Board system, but if your teacher does not regularly use this system for instruction, it is possible that this step could have been overlooked. If you have questions about how to join a course with the specific join code, contact your content teacher or Dr. Loving. School staff cannot complete this step for you. If there are any last-minute orders for AP exams (cost with late fee is $135), you must discuss this with Dr. Loving and join the course by noon on March 12.

Additionally, information will be available in the coming days and weeks about exact exam dates, times, and format. All students will have the option to test in-person at MLWGS, but digital at-home testing will also be available. The specs for digital exams are now available on the College Board website and Dr. Loving will post these and other important details on the “AP Testing” Schoology page. If you are not a member of this group and should be, notify Dr. Loving. Please look there over these next three months for important AP information.

Scrip: Chance to Win and Help Wanted

The next order due date is Sunday, March 21. Don't forget that for every $50 you spend by March 19, you will be placed in a drawing for $50 in scrip cards of your choice and a $25 Panera gift card.

We have a volunteer lined up to coordinate promotion, communication and place orders for next fall. We are looking for one or two volunteers who would be willing to deposit any money received at school for orders once a month (twice in December), and to sort card orders when they arrive as well as distribute orders to families at school. Serving as the Scrip Coordinator s a great way to get to know other MLWGS parents and become involved with the PTSA! MLWGS Drama Needs You

Calling all singers, dancers, and actors/actresses! MLWGS Drama will be accepting audition submissions for our virtual spring musical production, The Theory of Relativity, until Wednesday, March 17. Don’t want to be in front of the camera? There are many ways to get involved behind the scenes with costumes, props, lighting, sound mixing, editing, and even marketing! Youth Art and Music Month Continues

The Fine Arts Department will be celebrating YAMM 21 with a series of virtual events this year including:

Lecture on Japanese Aesthetics by VMFA lecturer Amanda Adams on Thursday, March 11, at 3:30 p.m. This lecture is sponsored by the Fine Arts Department, the National Art Honors Society, and VMFA Statewide Programs. Join here.

Next Walker Way Forum Is March 17

Our first Walker Way Forum, a speaker series for students designed around the pillars of the Walker Way, was held in February. Students who attended responded positively, and we are looking forward to hosting our second speaker, L. Robert Bolling, CEO of Child Savers, on Wednesday, March 17. Child Savers provides comprehensive support to children who have experienced trauma. Robert is a great person to speak to the Walker Way pillar of compassion. Virtual Night of the Dragon Set for April 24-- Registration Goes Live March 18!

On Thursday, March 18, the Night of the Dragon website will go live, and you’ll be able to register (for free) for the April 24 virtual event, purchase 50/50 raffle tickets, order dinner from Perch or East Coast Provisions (the first 100 orders get a free signature cocktail), see sneak peeks of the April 24 show and auction items, and more.

Week of March 3, 2021

School Counseling

On Thursday, March 4, the Powerschool portal will open up for class registration. Returning students should have a completed Course Registration Worksheet (found in the school counseling webpage for Course Scheduling Information and Forms) and their Powerschool login info. Some second-period teachers may give students time to register at the end of class. Otherwise, the portal will stay open through Friday. More specific instructions will be sent out mid-week.

Youth Art & Music Month

Do you love art and music? Then March is the month for you! Youth Art and Music Month helps to raise awareness of the importance of the fine arts in education. This year, Maggie Walker will celebrate with an online student art and music extravaganza on Thursday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m. Student artwork will be on display through a website gallery and slideshow, while our talented musicians will perform throughout the evening. This event is open to everyone, so please spread the word and join us to help celebrate Youth Art and Music Month on Zoom through our event website.

Project Engage Receives Grant

Project EngageRVA, the nonprofit founded by seniors Ria Bakshi, Bella Grace Finck, Justin Goldman, and Shreya Malani in early 2020, has been awarded the Hershey Heartwarming Project Action Grant for its efforts to engage and enrich elementary-age children with online classes ranging from yoga to marine science to quick math to world cultures to fairytale writing to foreign language, including American Sign Language. The purpose of the grant is to help children build meaningful connections and create more inclusive, empathetic, and kind communities. Project EngageRVA has also raised nearly $10,000 to fight the impact of COVID-19, and inspired and assisted with the formation of Project Engage groups in three other states.

Annual Fund Parent Competition Update

Each year, the Foundation sponsors a friendly competition among the classes to encourage parent support of its annual fund. All donations, regardless of amount, count toward each class total, and the winning class gets an ice cream party in June. March is when we take time to highlight the talented young artists and musicians at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School. To help celebrate Youth Art and Music Month, we will be having our annual student art exhibition! Each student in art and photography classes will have work on display. Additionally, there will be student music groups performing throughout the evening as well as films by our digital video students showcased in the auditorium.

Youth Art and Music Month opens tonight, March 4. The event runs from 6:30-8:30 p.m. with remarks at 6:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. This event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be provided so please bring your entire family.

Also, the Dragon's Lair will be open from 5-7 p.m.!

GENERAL PTSA MEETING MARCH 12

At the next general meeting, the topic will be student loans.

Student loans are a common consideration for students and parents who are figuring out how best to pay for college, but the student loan process can be confusing. Scott Kemp, Student Loan Advocate for the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV), will join us at our next PTSA meeting on Thursday, March 12 from 8-9 a.m. in room 153. Scott will walk through the loan process and share smart strategies for student loan borrowers. Stop by and learn how to make your borrowing strategies pay off. All parents are welcome – this information is helpful for any age student.

Today, February 26 at 11:45 a.m., the Fine Arts Department will be hosting its second “Lunchtime Lecture” of the year in the Black Box. Our speaker will be Twyla Kitts from the VMFA who will be giving a lecture title "The Fabergé Obsession: Romance, Revolution, and Russian Decorative Arts." Even though we have just finished the Global Cycle focus on Europe and Russia, please encourage students you feel might be interested to attend this event. These lectures are sponsored by the Visual Arts Boosters in cooperation with the VMFA Statewide Programs.

MLWGS DRAMA PRESENTS: THE ADDAMS FAMILY MUSICAL




Inspired by the Charles Addams cartoons, THE ADDAMS FAMILY musical explores the most unthinkable nightmare ever faced by this spooky, kooky, and ooky family: Wednesday Addams falls in love with the sweet, smart, “normal," Lucas Beineke. With secrets kept and potions concocted, both the Beineke and Addams family must attempt to accept their children’s love for one another even if it means breaking traditions. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

MLWGS DRAMA PRESENTS SWEET CHARITY

Inspired by Federico Fellini’s ‘Nights of Cabiria,’  SWEET CHARITY explores the turbulent love life of Charity Hope Valentine, a hopelessly romantic but comically unfortunate dance hall hostess in New York City. With a tuneful, groovy, mid-1960s score by Cy Coleman, sparkling lyrics by Dorothy Fields, and a hilarious book by Neil Simon, SWEET CHARITY captures all the energy, humor, and heartbreak of Life in the Big City for an unfortunate but irrepressible optimist.

Drama Club Sponsor Devon E. Mattys and the Maggie L. VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL TRAVELS TO STATE MARCH 1

The MW Girls Varsity Basketball team is advancing to the State tournament for the first time in school history!   

Please come out to the game this Friday, March 1 at 7 p.m. versus Strasburg High School. 

The game will be played at Stonewall High School, 150 Stonewall Lane, Quicksburg, VA.

The date for this event is Thursday, March 7 from 6-9 p.m. The event is open to the public and refreshments will be provided. Please mark your calendar and join us in celebrating the Arts at Maggie L. Walker!

Maggie L. Walker Mural Project Update:

In September, a committee was formed to work with artist, Colleen Phelon Hall, to oversee the creation of a mural to honor Maggie L. Walker on the wall outside of the Blue Stone Lobby.  Maggie L. Walker was an amazing woman and it is our goal to highlight her many contributions as an entrepreneur, educator, and civil rights activist. She started off as a teacher and went on to become the first woman to charter a bank, the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank. In addition, founded the St. Luke Herald newspaper which she used to raise awareness of civil rights issues. She opened a small department store called the St. Luke Emporium to serve the Jackson Ward community.

The committee included stakeholders from the faculty, administration, alumni of MLWGS and the original Maggie L. Walker High School, current students, and parents. Colleen presented details about the project and process to all current art students. Students were tasked with researching Maggie L. Walker and the classes shared what they had learned. The design process also included an online survey that went out to the stakeholder community asking about what they felt should be included in the design. These responses and key takeaways were shared with the art students to include in their initial concept designs. Colleen shared the project with the greater school community at Fall Festival. She presented the student concept designs to the committee and narrowed down to the primary design direction that the committee preferred. Drawing from this feedback, Colleen created two main concept drawings and presented them again to the classes and the committee. The classes provided feedback on a potential color palette. The committee made the final call on the mural design.

During Black History Month, Colleen has had the art students assisting in tracing the projected image onto the fabric panels and preparing the panels for the upcoming paint parties for the entire school community. During March, Women’s History month, there will be several Paint Parties where the panels will be painted in a “paint by number” style. Everyone is invited to join in the Paint Parties! Parties will take place: March 7 (6-9 p.m.) at the Youth Art and Music Month Exhibition, March 8 to honor International Women’s Day during lunch, March 9 (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) for alumni of the original Maggie L. Walker High School, March 14 for the Legacy Circle event, and March 15 during lunch. Other dates and times TBD. If the weather cooperates, installation is slated for the middle of April.

INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE FAIR FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLERS MARCH 9

Similar to previous years, we will hold the eleventh International Language Fair on March 9, 2019 at MLWGS. Middle school students from our community are offered three different workshops from our ten languages. These workshops are designed and conducted by Maggie Walker students in order to expose the participants to the culture of each language. Pizza and a drink will also be provided for students during lunch as well as a “goody bag” full of surprises.

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY

Transcribe volunteers help make Virginia’s history more complete!

Several diligent MLWGS students from Chesterfield, Goochland, Henrico, Prince George, and Richmond dove into the challenging and rewarding work of transcribing historic documents for the Making History: Transcribe! project on Wednesday.

Some found it easier to decipher cursive with help from a friend. And whether working independently or together, students discovered that reading these documents brings history to life in new ways.

During this Transcribe-a-thon, we worked with two recently merged collections: the Virginia Museum of History and Culture's Unknown No Longer and the Library of Virginia's Virginia Untold, both focused on pre-1865 Virginia documents by and/or about enslaved and free African Americans.

The letters, freedom suits, and other documents that students transcribed revealed both personal and public details about individuals and families, painful details about the brutality and inhumanity of slavery, and poignant details about resilience, tenacity, love, and loss--details that will soon be searchable by scholars, historians, and genealogists.

Along with other Transcribe volunteers, these MLWGS students are helping make the story that accessible historical records tell about Virginia and America more complete.

If you'd like to participate in this important project, stop by the library to see Ms. DeGroat. You may earn up to 35 hours toward the MLWGS community service requirement by participating. After you attend a training session or Transcribe-a-thon (our next one is on April 10), you can even work on transcriptions from home.

FY20 OPERATING BUDGET PROPOSAL OPEN FOR PUBLIC REVIEW AND COMMENT

The Regional School Board is accepting input via online comments on the FY20

MLWGS proposed operating budget. A public hearing on the proposed FY19 

operating budget will be held March 21, 2019, during the Regional School Board 

(RSB) meeting with approval projected on April 18, 2019. Members of the Maggie

L. Walker Governor’s School community who are unable to attend are invited to 

provide comment to the RSB on the proposed operating budget using this form 

by March 19, 2019. Comments should pertain to the FY20 operating budget 

proposal; inappropriate content will be deleted.

2019 FOURTH CIRCUIT ESSAY CONTEST- ENTRY DEADLINE APRIL 15, 2019

WHO MAY ENTER
The essay contest is open to all students currently in grades 9 through 12 from 

Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. 

Note: Children, grandchildren, stepchildren, and members of the household of 

a federal judge or federal judiciary employee are excluded from the competition.

ESSAY QUESTION
The prompt for the 2019 Essay Contest is “How has the right to freedom of speech

established for public school students in the Supreme Court case of Tinker v. 

Des Moines evolved in the 50 years since it was decided?”

LENGTH and FORMAT
Essays are limited to 1000 words. Citations should be placed in footnotes, endnotes,

or bibliographies and excluded from the word count. Submit your essay as a 

Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat PDF document. Do not include your name on 

your essay.

JUDGING
Understanding of constitutional principles (35 points)
Clarity and effectiveness in expressing the theme (30 points)
Grammar, spelling, and composition (20 points)
Originality (15 points)

Missing the submission deadline, providing false entry information, and

plagiarizing content are grounds for disqualification.

SPANISH AND FRENCH STUDENTS NEED HOST FAMILIES IN JULY

Share your heart and home this summer! Host a student from Spain or France

(ages 13-17) in your home for 3-4 weeks. Learn about their culture while he

or she learns about living in an American family just by being a part of what you 

regularly do. We have a variety of programs to suit your family’s work or 

non-working schedule. Families receive stipends to help out with expenses. 

We can help work out transportation or vacation concerns. This will be a treasured

memory for your family!

VA STUDENTS IN TOP 10 IN ACHIEVEMENT ON AP EXAMS- 

MW STUDENTS OUTPACE NATIONAL RESULTS

According to the Virginia Department of Education in their press release dated February 6th,
nearly three out of every 10 of Virginia’s 2018 public high school graduates demonstrated
college-level achievement on at least one Advanced Placement examination, according to data
released today by the College Board, the nonprofit organization that manages the AP program.

The College Board reported that 28.5 percent of the commonwealth’s 2018 graduating seniors
earned a score of three or higher on at least one AP test. Nationwide, 23.5 percent of graduating
seniors achieved scores of three or higher. The commonwealth ranked eighth in the nation in AP
performance.

The MLWGS Class of 2018 had 180 graduates.

OUR STUDENTS SCORED 97.2% ON QUALIFYING SCORES ACCORDING TO THE

AP EQUITY AND EXCELLENCE REPORT FOR SENIORS WHO SCORED 3 OR HIGHER

ON AT LEAST ONE AP EXAM AT ANY POINT DURING HIGH SCHOOL DIVIDED BY

THE TOTAL NUMBER OF SCHOOL SENIORS.

Congratulations are also in order to our outstanding faculty and counselor leaders

who make results like this possible for their students.

Although colleges and universities set their own policies for awarding credit, a

score of three or higher on an AP test is generally accepted as indicative of

college-level work. The College Board estimates that in the aggregate, Virginia

students in the class of 2018 earned more than 313,000 college credits by passing

AP exams and potentially saved more than $140 million in tuition.

The 10 most popular AP courses among Virginia’s 2018 graduating seniors were-

in descending order- English Language and Composition, U.S. History, U.S. Government

and Politics, Psychology, World History, English Literature and Composition, Calculus AB,

Biology, Statistics, and Environmental Science.
