HELP RESTOCK THE GRATITUDE BOX
TWO WEEKS LEFT!

When a student or teacher would like to brighten someone’s day with “Thank you,” or a kind, encouraging, celebratory, or empathetic note, they can grab a card from the library’s Gratitude Box.

This has led to a happy problem: the MLWGS Library’s Gratitude Box is running low.

The “Restock the Box” supply drive runs through December 9.  Thanks to all who’ve sent supplies already. They’re already in use.

If you’d like to help restock the gratitude box too, Ms. DeGroat will gladly accept the following:

  • Thank You, Congratulations, Thinking of You, Happy Birthday, Get Well, & Sympathy cards (students seem especially fond of bright, hip looking designs)
  • Blank note cards
  • Colorful card stock
  • Decorative writing paper
  • Decorative cut scissors
  • Handmade paper
  • Stickers
  • Glue sticks

Your contribution helps support a culture of caring at MLWGS.  Thank you!

PTSA MEETING MONDAY DECEMBER 5

Please attend the General PTSA meeting on Monday December 5 in room 153 at MLWGS.  The meeting will start at 8:00 a.m. with about 30 minutes of prepared remarks from Maggie Walker’s own Ms. Sharon Parker, followed by a Q&A session.

The topic will be Senior Seminars / Senior Mentorships and will be geared toward parents of Freshmen and Sophomores (although everyone is invited) to provide an introduction to this unique program with the hope that parents will have more time to consider how their student can take advantage of this opportunity in the best way possible.

Senior Seminars and Mentorships provide wonderful opportunities for students to explore areas of personal interest and complete their senior research requirement.

Whether participating in a seminar or a mentorship, students engage in field-based research, create a product, write a research paper, and present at Senior Showcase. Students earn two VCU credits (pass/fail) in Research Methods upon successful completion of all requirements of the Senior Seminar/Mentorship Program.

ATTENTION TALENTED YOUNG SINGERS, DANCERS, MUSICIANS, ACTORS, AND SPOKEN WORD ARTISTS

It's time to audition for Richmond Youth Peace Project's
Generation Dream 2017

This February, the Richmond Youth Peace Project (RYPP), will present Generation Dream 2017, our annual tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  For more than a decade RYPP--the Peace Center's program for teens--has showcased talented young people from throughout central Virginia in performances promoting peace, nonviolence and social justice.  As anyone who has attended one of our previous shows will tell you, the performance is always inspirational and uplifting.  This winter's first show is scheduled for Friday, February 3, 7 p.m., at the Richmond Public Library's downtown branch, as a First Friday event.  We plan to schedule at least one additional show later in the month.

Auditions are required for new performers.  We are seeking musical groups, singers, dancers, actors and spoken word artists.  Performers need not be available for both shows dates in order to participate.  All performances should in some way reflect Dr. King's message of peace, nonviolence and social justice.  We encourage performers to consider current issues, both local and global, as they make their selections.  Students will also earn community service credits for participating in the show.  For information, or to schedule an audition, email rypp@rpec.org.

Video of previous performances can be viewed on the Peace Center's YouTube Channel  https://www.youtube.com/user/RichmondPeace

STUDENT-LED IDEATION CHALLENGE (SLIC) PROGRAM

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce the Student-Led Ideation Challenge (SLIC) Program. The SLIC Program is a competitive ideation challenge utilizing Design Thinking principles that is open to all high school students in Virginia and is being offered in collaboration with the VDOE and the Innovative Solutions Consortium at no cost to students, schools, or school divisions. The purpose of the SLIC Program is to further prepare Virginia’s students for the world ahead via their participation in project-based learning opportunities that will support the development of critical skills while enhancing general student knowledge through meaningful engagement in a variety of real-world topic areas.

The Innovative Solutions Consortium (ISC), a Virginia non-profit and national leader in public challenges, successfully implemented the Loudoun County Public Schools Challenge in 2015. Using the Loudon Challenge as a model, the VDOE in collaboration with the ISC looks forward to piloting the SLIC program this year and will seek input and feedback from students, teachers, and other state and local leaders on further refining the program for future challenges.

The SLIC program presents students with selecting a challenge question and working in a team to brainstorm ideas to solve the challenge. Students will develop a proposed solution to the challenge question, verify and validate the solution through research on similar solutions in the marketplace, and develop and implement a plan with estimated costs and measurement tools.  The winners will have the opportunity to build their prototype of the solution and present it to key stakeholders culminating in school, division, regional, and state-level competitions. Additionally, schools/teachers that support the winning teams from each region will receive $500 to use on future project-based learning activities in their classrooms.

The SLIC challenge questions for this year are in the areas of education, agriculture and global warming, and technology and robotics and are designed to be implemented in the subject areas of English/Language Arts, Science, Mathematics, and Career and Technical Education.

In preparation for this effort, two-hour training sessions will be provided in all eight regions during the month of October. This training will be available to teachers, counselors, Instructional Technology Resource Teachers (ITRTs) or other educators that will provide support to student ideation teams. For those unable to attend the in-person training, live-webinars, recorded training, and other supporting documentation and points-of-contact will be made available.

The available in-person and webinar training sessions by region are as follows (session sign-up is available as part of the SLIC registration process):

MLWGS LIBRARY COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY FOR 2016/2017

Do you love books and libraries?

Do you have skills in customer service, marketing, online research, or video production?

Will you have a study block in your schedule next year?

Consider applying for a library assistant position!

Since this role will include tasks typical of library assistant positions in college and public libraries (e.g. customer service, circulating and processing books, etc.), being a library assistant at MLWGS may give you an edge when seeking a work-study assignment or part-time work in a library. In addition, a special facet of this role at MLWGS will be for each library assistant to adopt a section of the collection that interests them (e.g. psychology, economics, poetry).

Library assistants may also propose special projects related to an identified need in the library or to their adopted section, such as producing video tutorials, marketing the library on social media channels, facilitating a book discussion, designing a book display, writing book reviews or producing book trailers, or organizing a related activity.  Similar to student ambassadors, they may earn community service for any hours during which they are actively engaged in completing library assistant duties.

Through an application and interview process, Ms. DeGroat will select a small team of assistants for the 2016-2017 school year.

If you have questions about this opportunity or would like an application, please see Ms. DeGroat.  Applications from current 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade students are due by June 7, 2016.

GRASP, A VIRGINIA COLLEGE ACCESS ORGANIZATION, RECEIVES $5K GRANT FROM COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE CENTRAL BLUE RIDGE

Thanks to a $5,000 grant from Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge, and, more specifically, the Jamin Fund, GReat Aspirations Scholarship Program, Inc. (GRASP), a college-access organization, can continue to provide its financial aid services to high school students in the Central Blue Ridge area of Virginia during the 2016-2017 school year.

“GRASP is delighted to be providing its financial aid services to students in the Central Blue Ridge region,” said Bettsy Heggie, GRASP CEO.  “This grant, in particular, shows community support not only for the GRASP program but also for the region’s students as they take their next steps toward education after high school and the opportunity for a better future as a result of that education.”

GRASP, a Virginia non-profit, implements its services via advisors who provide free, confidential, one-on-one counseling to students seeking financial aid and scholarships for continuing education after high school – whether that is technical school, community college or a four-year university.

GRASP advisors now serve students and families in 76 Virginia schools, from the greater Richmond area, to the Central Blue Ridge region, to Lancaster County in the east, and to Sussex County in the south.  The highly trained, GRASP advisors are adept at navigating the complexities of the college and post-secondary education financial aid process.  They also have a passion for helping today’s youth grasp infinite opportunities.

During the 2014-2015 academic year, GRASP advisors overall met with more than 6,800 students individually, helping them with a game plan for education after high school.  Additionally, GRASP awarded 124 Last Dollar scholarships totaling $125,000 to students, providing additional financial assistance toward their educational goals.

GRASP was co-founded in 1983 by Senator Walter Stosch and Dr. Ray Gargiulo.  GRASP advisors work one day per week at each school.  Appointments, which are free of charge, can be made through the schools’ counseling offices.  More information about GRASP is available at the website, www.grasp4va.org.

LUNCHTIME IN THE FORUM TALK, TUESDAY, MAY 31
“Reliable Tools for Data Exploration in Healthcare”

Dr. Doshi-Velez, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Harvard University and MLWGS alum, will talk about some work she’s doing to understand non-identifiability in the context of non-negative matrix factorization (NMF).  NMF is a popular tool to do data exploration, and recently she has been doing work to see how robust it is: that is, can there sometimes be two very different explanations for the same data?  And if so, how can researchers expose them so that clinical scientists can use them to generate the next study?  She will start with some concrete examples, talk about some underlying math, and touch on what students might want to study if they want to do machine learning/data science in the future.

Doshi-Velez is excited about methods to turn data into actionable knowledge.  Her core research in machine learning, computational statistics, and data science is inspired by—and often applied to—the objective of accelerating scientific progress and practical impact in healthcare and other domains.  Specifically, she is interested in questions such as: How can we design robust, principled models to combine complex data sets with other knowledge sources?  How can we design models that summarize and generate hypotheses from such data?  How can we characterize the uncertainty in large, heterogeneous data to provide better support for decisions?  Doshi-Velez is interested in developing the probabilistic methods to address these questions.  Prior to joining SEAS, Doshi-Velez was an NSF CI-TRaCS Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School.  She was a Marshall Scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge from 2007-2009, and she was named one of IEEE’s “AI Top 10 to Watch” in 2013.”

Doshi-Velez graduated from GSGIS in 2001 and earned her PhD from MIT in 2012.  She is currently an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

SPEAK UP AT THE BUDGET TOWN HALL
TOMORROW DECEMBER 2, 6:00-7:30 P.M.

The annual budget development process for MLWGS is starting. Last year, parents and students spoke up about a variety of needs including a new activity bus and textbooks. Guess what? The activity bus was replaced as well as textbooks for some of the classes that need them. The Regional School Board will listen, it just needs your input. Come to the Budget Town Hall on Wednesday, December 2, 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the MLWGS Auditorium. Speakers need to signup in advance by contacting Barbara Marshall at bmarshall@gsgis.k12.va.us no later than 10:00 am on December 2. COUNSELING SERVICES AVAILABLE

The MLWGS School Counseling Department would like to extend its sympathy to the family and classmates of Isabell McKinney. Izzy was an exceptional young person whose presence and contributions will be missed by all of us. For the first couple of days after Izzy’s death, Richmond Public Schools psychologists and social workers assisted the School Counseling office in supporting students.  Students have also done a wonderful job supporting each other. MLWGS will be forming lunchtime grief support groups for those students who may need extra assistance. We hope to start these groups before leaving for Winter Break. Please contact your student’s counselor if you feel a group would be helpful for your child.
