Senior Art Show Opens Friday

Please join us for the gala opening of the 2021 MLWGS Senior Art Exhibition: Enchanted at Artworks Gallery on Friday, June 4, at 6-9 p.m. The show, which is the capstone event of our visual arts program, highlights the collected works of 13 Maggie Walker seniors including Emma Lindley, Elizabeth Celentano, Azaria Mosby, Cooper Tsow, Ria Bakshi, Rylan Karjane, Shreya Malani, Ada Rigsby, Isabel Martin, Julianne Zielinski, Anika Kalluri, Grace Saunders, and Helen Hall. Come meet these amazing young artists and mingle with other Maggie Walker art lovers.

Due to COVID restrictions, there will be a staggered opening. Therefore, you must RSVP to attend the opening using this link: bit.ly/enchanted21. Artworks Gallery is located at 320 Hull Street (23224) in the Manchester area of downtown Richmond.
The show will continue through June 13.

Richmond Kickers Fundraiser for Class of 2024

This year’s freshman class reached out to the Richmond Kickers and arranged an awesome opportunity where the team will give the class 30% of each ticket sold through this website. Their class officers think that this is not only a great way to help the Class of ’24 generate funds, but also an excellent way for the MLWGS community to casually come together before the end of the school year. The tickets are for the match on Saturday, June 5.

Last Call for Baccalaureate Photos

The PTSA is honored to present the 2021 Senior Baccalaureate Service featuring remarks from Richmond leaders and musical selections performed by fellow graduates and peers in a Smoke and Scales "Special Edition" on Wednesday, June 16. To help us create our video, we would like to feature seniors in their caps and gowns. Seniors, please upload your cap and gown photo by Monday, June 7, to Baccalaureate Cap and Gown Photos. Scrip News

The MLWGS PTSA is excited to announce that the Great Lake Scrip program has raised $1,754 this school year (8/1/20-5/28/21), even with the challenges of Covid. Thank you to the families who have made a huge difference! The potential is huge and it's never too late to start doing some of your everyday shopping with Scrip and letting those retailers you already shop give money back to MLWGS at no extra cost to you. If you have had any trouble getting started, don't hesitate to contact your PTSA parent/scrip coordinator Laura Dysart. While we don't have any more plastic card due dates, you can shop e-certificates over the summer and receive them immediately!

Because May ended on a holiday, this year's competition to see which class has the highest participation rate in the MLWGS Foundation Annual Fund parent campaign has been extended through this Friday! As of last week, the juniors were leading the way in impressive fashion, so now's the time to get in on the action.

Counseling Announcements

Rising seniors:
Juniors and their parents/guardians were sent an e-mail on Friday, May 28, filled with announcements pertaining to the end of the school year. Here are a couple highlights:

-College Boot Camp will return to a fully in-person event in August. Interested students of the Class of 2022 may register here AND pay on the MLWGS website by the June 11 deadline. Information about fee waivers, if needed, is included within the Sign-Up Genius.

-Juniors are invited to begin working on their brag sheet in Naviance. An optional parent questionnaire has also been released (under Surveys). These are not due until early September. Questions about Naviance? E-mail Ms. Forquer or Dr. Loving.

Graduating seniors:
Students, please check your MLWGS e-mail accounts for any messages that might have been delivered to you on Friday, May 28, requesting clarification about your college lists or senior survey responses. (These were only sent to select seniors.) Also, if you are offered a spot off a college waitlist, change your intended college, or receive additional scholarships as we end the school year, please update your senior counselor by e-mail.

Celebrate Your Grad & Leave Your Mark!

The Governor’s School Foundation invites families of MLWGS seniors and graduates to purchase inscribed pavers to leave a lasting tribute at the school. Pavers are a great graduation gift from parents, grandparents, or anyone trying to find something special and lasting to give their favorite graduate(s). You can purchase either a bluestone paver inside the school lobby or a brick paver to be placed on the Lombardy Street walkway. All donated funds beyond the cost of the engraving are tax-deductible.

Orders must be received by July 1. The cost is:

Annual Fund Competition

The Class of 2022 continues to lead the Parent Annual Fund Competition. You can make an annual fund donation to support your student's class here. All donations of any amount count toward the class participation percentage, and the winning class gets a yummy prize. All contributions directly support our amazing Dragons and teachers.

Gift Card Bonanza

The Foundation is collecting gift cards for this year’s Night of the Dragon auction. Please consider supporting our scrip program or local businesses by purchasing a gift card(s) to donate, or donate cards you have but don’t see yourself using. Gift cards (and other donations) can be put into the box marked Auction in the main office off the Bluestone Lobby or delivered to the Foundation Office any time between now and April 15 (extended deadline). Help Out with Scrip

It's not too late to purchase gift cards for your class baskets for our Night of the Dragon auction. Pick a card related to your class theme, and it will be delivered to your room parents prior to the auction. Let me know that is your intent, and I'll let your room parent know it's coming, and follow up with you.

Our next order date is Sunday, April 18, but you can shop for e-certificates and receive them immediately. Be thinking of Mother's Day and graduation gifts!

Interested in getting more involved with the PTSA Board and meeting more Dragon families? We are creating a Scrip Team for Fall 2021. School Counseling

On Thursday, March 4, the Powerschool portal will open up for class registration. Returning students should have a completed Course Registration Worksheet (found in the school counseling webpage for Course Scheduling Information and Forms) and their Powerschool login info. Some second-period teachers may give students time to register at the end of class. Otherwise, the portal will stay open through Friday. More specific instructions will be sent out mid-week.

Youth Art & Music Month

Do you love art and music? Then March is the month for you! Youth Art and Music Month helps to raise awareness of the importance of the fine arts in education. This year, Maggie Walker will celebrate with an online student art and music extravaganza on Thursday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m. Student artwork will be on display through a website gallery and slideshow, while our talented musicians will perform throughout the evening. This event is open to everyone, so please spread the word and join us to help celebrate Youth Art and Music Month on Zoom through our event website.

MLWGS School Directory Update!

The recently updated MLWGS School Directory is posted on PowerSchool and PTBoard. This version includes any changes added in PowerSchool prior to the end of the fall semester. Note that ALL changes should always be entered FIRST through PowerSchool.

Project Engage Receives Grant

Project EngageRVA, the nonprofit founded by seniors Ria Bakshi, Bella Grace Finck, Justin Goldman, and Shreya Malani in early 2020, has been awarded the Hershey Heartwarming Project Action Grant for its efforts to engage and enrich elementary-age children with online classes ranging from yoga to marine science to quick math to world cultures to fairytale writing to foreign language, including American Sign Language. The purpose of the grant is to help children build meaningful connections and create more inclusive, empathetic, and kind communities. Project EngageRVA has also raised nearly $10,000 to fight the impact of COVID-19, and inspired and assisted with the formation of Project Engage groups in three other states.

Each year, the Foundation sponsors a friendly competition among the classes to encourage parent support of its annual fund. All donations, regardless of amount, count toward each class total, and the winning class gets an ice cream party in June. Maggie L. Walker Mural Update:

Educational signage to be unveiled at Fall Fest at 6 p.m.

Please join us for an unveiling ceremony for new educational signage for the Maggie L. Walker mural. The Maggie L. Walker collaborative mural project was painted by over 325 people including alumni of the original Maggie L. Walker High School along with MLWGS students, faculty, alumni, and parents. The mural is a visual memorial of the many accomplishments of Maggie L. Walker. This new signage details the collaborative process used to create the mural and will provide an educational reference for the symbols and elements included in the mural. The mural was generously sponsored by the PTSA and Visual Arts Boosters. The new signage is courtesy of the PTSA. Please join us at 6 p.m. at the Bluestone entrance in front of the mural.

SCRIP ORDER THIS FRIDAY BY NOON

Our first order due date is this Friday, October 4 by noon. Please go to www.shopwithscrip.com to enroll, to see the full list of retailers, and to purchase gift cards. The MLWGS enrollment code is C43669E564L28. Consider buying gift cards for retailers you regularly shop or for gifts. You can pay with Presto Pay, credit card, or by check (payable to MLWGS PTSA); checks need to be in the PTSA Box in room 100 by noon on October 4. If you would like to use a paper order form, it is attached (you can find a full list of retailers on line). Please submit it with payment to room 100 by the deadline. Cards will arrive at Maggie Walker the following week. When the cards arrive, you will be contacted by your Scrip Coordinator with options for pick up of your cards.

ATTENTION SENIOR PARENTS

The second edition of the Senior Newsletter was sent out on Friday, September 27 and can be found on the school counseling website. This newsletter contains important college and scholarship-related reminders and deadlines.

Susan Teerlink, our GRASP Representative, is available to assist with financial aid information. Ms. Teerlink is here on Mondays and students and/or parents can sign up for an appointment in the School Counseling Office. Seniors can begin filling out the FAFSA form on October 1! PSAT DAY IS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16

The PSAT is a great practice opportunity for the SAT. PSAT results from the junior year administration are used for qualification purposes for National Merit Scholarship Programs. The counseling department distributed PSAT Student Guides to all 10th and 11th graders during lunch time assemblies during the week of Monday, September 30. The guides contain information about the test as well as a full-length practice test. Students are encouraged to take the practice test before testing day. More information about the PSAT can be found at www.collegeboard.org/psat. Score reports will be available online in mid-December and paper copies will be distributed in January during lunch-time grade-level assemblies. Juniors will be encouraged to register for an SAT or ACT date in the spring by visiting the testing organization websites. Sophomores and Juniors in AP classes will be encouraged to register for SAT subject tests as appropriate.

Students are reminded to bring #2 pencils and calculators for testing. The College Board does not allow makeup testing for the PSATs so it is important that students arrive at school on time.

The Foundation Annual Fund parent competition is off and running! Each year Dragon parents battle it out to see which class has the highest parent percentage of Foundation Annual Fund supporters. This year the class with the highest parent percentage will receive a student ice cream party at the end of the school year! Help the Foundation meet its goal of raising $330,000 before the end of the school year.

YEARBOOKS ARE HERE!

This is it: time to pick up or purchase your 2017 MLWGS Yearbook! Seniors can pick up or purchase their books in the commons on Tuesday, May 30. Non-seniors can get theirs in the Commons Wednesday - Friday, May 31 - June 2. Not sure if you've prepaid? Check the list outside Room 121. Didn't preorder? Bring $55 cash or check (made payable to MLWGS).

ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN

If you have not already, don't forget to make a gift to the 2016-17 Annual Fund Campaign! Parent support is essential in the Foundation's support of enrichments for MLWGS, things like student financial aid, academic enhancements and travel opportunities, and teacher professional development and continuing education.

So far this year, the Annual Fund Campaign has raised $272,000 for the school, which is 90% of our $300,000 goal. Overall current parent participation is 42%, with the greatest percentage of giving from parents in the sophomore class.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

A MLGWS alumna, Katie Houston (Class of 2004) has reached out to offer a community service opportunity to current students. She's volunteering heavily with an organization called ReEstablish Richmond, which works to help refugees acclimate and put down roots in the area.

They have a high need right now for volunteer tutors who are willing to help middle and elementary school students with English language skills and simple math skills (i.e. counting to 100). The kids can communicate verbally in English, but a lot of them are struggling with literacy, and their schools don't have the capacity to help them adequately.

Any interested students can contact Katie directly at kghouston05@gmail.com. She would really love to have Maggie Walker students involved with the organization and emphasized that if anyone is available to help soon, the need for tutors is pressing.

June 1 is the last day to purchase your own pair of VANS with Jordan Keller’s (’17, Richmond) winning design for the "VANS Customs" design contest. She did this work as part of her National Art Honor Society (NAHS) service requirement. The theme was “Technology in Design”; her interpretation appears in the image above.

The names have been chosen for the adult ospreys featured on the RVA Osprey Cam and they are....

"Maggie" for the female/mom.

"Walker" for the male/dad.

"Maggie is the female. She has the brownish ring of feathers around her upper chest. Walker, the male, has all white feathers in that same area," RichmondOutside.com said.

The babies are not being named because it's expected that once they're bigger and can fly, they will probably leave the nest for good around the end of the summer.

The names were announced at the Friends of the James River Park System booth at Dominion Riverrock and were chosen from a public contest which received over 1500 votes in 10 days.

Maggie and Walker are feeding the chicks regularly and the babies are getting bigger every day.

Walker Athletic Director Paige Hawkins is elated MLWGS won the USA Today America’s Best Athletic Program Poll! With the support of the MLWGS community, the Dragons take first place in the 2015-2016 Best Athletic Program with 121,949 votes. GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL ANNUAL FUND CHALLENGE

The Governor's School Foundation 2016 Parent Class Annual Fund Challenge is well underway! At this time, thanks to the generosity of MLWGS parents and alumni, the Governor’s School Foundation has raised $273,222 towards its Annual Fund goal of $300,000! The Foundation is very close to meeting its goal, but cannot do it without you.

Through the Annual Fund, the Governor's School Foundation is able to directly support enrichment opportunities like academic competitions, student travel, as well as new technology, and student aid. The support of MLWGS parents is critical in these efforts and the Foundation is most grateful for this continued commitment.

There is still plenty of time to make a contribution to the 2016 Annual Fund. Consider making an Annual Fund gift in honor of a Dragon’s favorite teacher. Graduation Ticket Pick-up

Graduation tickets may be picked up the week of June 6 during lunch from Ms. Sheppard in room 330. Please note that these are tickets for admission to the graduation exercises and are not the announcements ordered from Herff-Jones. Anyone planning to come watch a graduate receive their diploma must have a ticket to gain entrance into the theater. Each student will receive 13 tickets, and more tickets may be available on a case-by-case basis. If tickets are lost, they are not replaceable. Please keep them in a safe place until June 17.

Senior Recognition Night

Wednesday, June 8, 7:00 p.m., Auditorium

This is the night the MLWGS community comes together to honor the many contributions and memories of its graduating seniors. The highlight of the evening for the students is always the Senior Slide Show, and it is a great opportunity to get a sense of what the last four years have looked like inside MLWGS’s halls. Students should arrive by 6:30 for the line-up wearing professional/business attire; caps and gowns are NOT worn for this event.

Graduation Rehearsal

Friday, June 17, 9:00 a.m., Altria Theater, 6 N. Laurel Street

Graduation rehearsal is held at the Altria Theater. Parking for graduation is available at the VCU parking deck for a minimal fee (entrances are on Cherry and Laurel Streets.) Please adhere to posted street parking signs as ticketing and towing are strictly enforced. Seniors must arrive no later than 8:45 a.m. and report to the downstairs ballroom (enter through the Main Street entrance towards the rear of the building). Rehearsal will begin at 9:00 a.m. sharp. ANY STUDENT WHO MISSES REHEARSAL WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO WALK IN THE ACTUAL GRADUATION CEREMONY. Parents are asked to please work with their student to make sure he or she is on time. Practice is usually completed by 11:30 a.m. or so; but given that rehearsal will take as long as needed to perfect the process, please do not plan anything that requires a student to leave early or be gone by a certain time. This run-through is crucial to the success of the graduation ceremony.

Please note: Graduation regalia will be distributed at the end of the rehearsal.

Friday, June 17, 3:00 p.m., Altria Theater, 6 N. Laurel Street

Graduates must arrive at the downstairs ballroom by 2:00 p.m. For organizational reasons, this area is off limits to parents, relatives, and friends; MLWGS appreciates your understanding. Cap, gown, and tassel are the most important items for the day, but students are asked to dress appropriately: dark dress pants, collared shirt and tie for the young men, dresses for the young women. Students may wear cords earned as part of their membership in our Honor Societies (as has been MLWGS’s custom). Students may wear one piece of additional pre-approved regalia which they have earned as a member of an enduring MLWGS organization.

Perhaps the most important clothing decision for the day, however, is shoes. Dress shoes and socks for the boys and low-heeled dress shoes for the girls are the best choices; please, no “flip-flops” or athletic shoes. Additionally, decorations on mortarboards are absolutely prohibited. Note: The “collar” that comes with the graduation gown will not be used.

Doors to Altria Theater will open at 2:30 p.m. Guests should enter through the front doors and must have a ticket to attend graduation. Seating is not reserved. Handicap seating is available in multiple locations; please see one of the ushers at the door upon arrival if this seating is needed. Parking for graduation is available at the VCU parking deck for a minimal fee (entrances are on Cherry and Laurel Streets.) Please adhere to posted street parking signs as ticketing and towing are strictly enforced.

Photographs during the ceremony are only allowed from attendee’s seats. The Altria Theater will not permit audience members to spill into the aisles for this activity, and they enforce this restriction quite seriously. However, Lifetouch will be taking pictures of each individual student as he/she receives his/her diploma. This year, a proof picture will be mailed directly to each family and be accessible online along with ordering information.

Last but certainly not least, a brief reception for students and their families will be held immediately after graduation in the downstairs ballroom of Altria Theater. Graduation activities should conclude by 6:00 p.m.

DRAGON SUCCESS AT INTEL INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR (ISEF)

Congratulations to Maggie Walker's Camille Yoke ('16, Chesterfield), for her recent participation at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona: earned with her winning project from the Metro Richmond STEM Fair and the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair, 'Constructive Interference of Seismic Surface Waves Antipodal to Crater Impact Sites on Terrestrial Bodies'. While at ISEF Camille did an amazing job and earned the following awards:

Astronomical Society of the Pacific and American Astronomical Society (AAS)

o Winner: Camille Yoke

European Organization for Nuclear Research – CERN

o Winner: Camille Yoke

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

o Winner: Camille Yoke

Camille Yoke - 1st Place Winner - an asteroid will be named after her

o Project: Constructive Interference of Seismic Surface Waves Antipodal to Crater Impact Sites on Terrestrial Bodies

o Teacher: Harold Houghton

Camille Yoke - Best in Category Winner - Cash Award, and $1000 to her school

Camille Yoke - Innovation Exploration Award, California Institute of Technology

o Camille will get a behind the scenes look at CAL Tech in the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Program

The JPL Program is managed for NASA by the California Institute of Technology; it is the leading U.S. center for robotic exploration of the solar system

GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL FOUNDATION 2016 PARENT CLASS

ANNUAL FUND CHALLENGE!

This week, the Governor's School Foundation is excited about the 2016 Parent Class Annual Fund Challenge! Through the Annual Fund, the Governor's School Foundation is able to directly support things like academic competitions, student travel, as well as new technology, and student aid. The support of MLWGS parents is critical in these efforts and The Foundation is most grateful for your continued commitment. Be on the lookout for emails from parent representatives from your child's class.

Here is a summary of parent participation to date:

Freshman Parents (2019)	37%

BACCALAUREATE SERVICE

6:30 p.m.

The Baccalaureate Service will be held at Reveille United Methodist Church, 4200 Cary Street Road.

Please note that the address on the invitation is incorrect. Reveille is located at 4200 Cary Street Road, not East Cary Street.

Sponsored by the MLWGS PTSA, the interfaith service begins at 6:30 p.m. and will last approximately one hour. Students are not required to attend, but this traditional and memorable event celebrates finishing one chapter in their lives and beginning the next. Families and friends of graduates are most welcome to attend. The official invitation from the PTSA will arrive by mail in a couple of weeks.
